I do not find any leaks, yet I dont feel I get much better gas mileage than listed on earlier post.

Is there any short , easy to understand and perform test for dizzy and carb which would say not prove it is brand new, but would make one believe it is performing properly .

Also related to vacuum gauge, is there any number at start up with choke on, and with choke off that would imply all is good?

thanks to all as I work on improving my understanding,
brian

For the distributor, check the timing to be certain it is spot on. Then check the weights with the cap off. Too often they get gummed up with junk and rust and can't swing out properly. This can make the timing retarded when running at speed.

Next check the little air line that goes to the diaphragm on the side of the distributor. This is "vacuum advance" meaning if it is leaking or not providing vacuum, the spark is not advanced. You might pull it off when running to be sure there is suction. The little tin diaphragm could get bad. It should draw in when vacuum is applied at fast idle.

I have not had one for a long time. But I believe you can get the diaphragm to suck in and stay if you put your finger on the tube. It should hold its position.

I had a 5 mpg car once.  It turned out it had the choke on whenever I was driving.  I only drove a few miles to work in winter so the choke forced the carb to suck fuel.  If you have an intake manifold with the exhaust crossover blocked off or if you have a bad linkage problem, the choke could be your enemy.  Just pull over, turn off your engine and pull off the air cleaner cover when engine has just heated up and be sure the choke is open.  Just my two cents worth.

Not recommended test I would consider: block off your fuel lines and run a fuel line to a 5 gallon can strapped to your (front or rear bumper or wherever you dare), drive about five highway miles and check to see how much you used.

Oops, apologies. I accidentally posted my response to the "gas begone thread" to this one.  I am less incoherent than I appeared.

Tim, when I lived on LI in my twenties, I suffered from incoherent directionalistic dyslexia.  That was because I moved to LI from California. In California I learned directions from landmarks: everything toward NYC was east and everything toward the ocean was west.  Then on Long Island, NYC was west and the ocean was east and I was confused.  That is my excuse and I am sticking to it.  Now, back in California I am only coherent when facing Mexico because I was born north of the Canadian border, and as a young child, everything south of that border was south to me. It is good to have conjured up a logical reason as to why I am confused.

I had the same problem when I moved to Tampa in the 70's. I really didn't have the lay of the land, but it turns out that I commuted to and from work on a named north/south road that ran east/west where I used it, and an east/west road that ran north/south on my route. That got me so scrambled, I never really got an intuitive feel for the area the whole time I lived there.

Here in AZ, it's a lot easier... north, cool... south, Mexico... west, ocean... east, the rest of the country. All the roads are laid out in a grid pattern that's almost entirely N/S/E/W because there really aren't any bodies of water to avoid.
