I saw a Gas \ Propane 6.2KW generator at Costco this weekend for $700.

It's a brand I've never heard of "Smarter Tools" and is advertised as 7.5KW peak, 6.2KW running watts. It includes wheels and is model number ST-GP7500DEB.

I have what appears to be the same generator in a single fuel model. Just about positive it's made in China but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mine runs great and although it is set up for electric start, it pulls easily and has always started on the first or second pull. Noisy however.

Posted this some time ago. I still see them at Costco, though I don't know if they have anything to offer the 23'ers.
I'm kind of stuck on dual fuel.

That's very similar to the TroyBilt unit I installed. While mine is
perhaps a little noisier than the old Onan, it's certainly not a problem
for us inside during the short times we normally use it. Once I solved the
fuel pump problem by using a crankcase pressure fluctuation operated pump,
it's been completely reliable and trouble-free. It starts easily and runs
as long as we want it to, powering everything in the coach better than
shore power -- what more could we ask?

Ken,

I'm leaning in that direction. Could anything be done to quiet it down any?
Maybe a slightly different muffler?

Thanks,

Guy

I don't think adaptation of these one cylinder generators presents any insurmountable engineering challenges. Especially if the cylinder head is not vertical, it should fit in our drawers. 12v fans of a whole variety of sizes (most designed for radiator cooling) are easy to find online.

The issue is noise. They are loud. When I think of all the one cylinder engines I have ever heard run, whether they be lawn mowers, generators or motorcycles, they have always been loud.

Harbor Freight advertises Chinese one cylinder generators with the ad touting how "Super Quiet" they are. I am guessing, but I think that probably just means that it is slightly quieter than other one cylinder motors.

My Onan isn't the quietest thing, but I wonder if a two cylinder system might be inherently quieter.

Francois,

About a hundred years ago a (honestly near forty), a genius engineer friend designed and built a very effective small engine muffler. When we put it on a little B&S it became clear why nobody would be interested. That engine was so mechanically noisy that the muffler's real value was hiding that fact.

Part of the reason Onans are not so unpleasant is that they are 1800 RPM units. This does a while lot for being nice.

Matt

I have though about my Onan,

An 1800 RPM system is normally less noisy than a 3600 RPM system.  My single cylinder Kohler is substantially quieter than my single cylinder Yamaha.  The Kohler has a 4 pole (1800 RPM) alternator, the Yomamaha has a 2 pole (3600) RPM alternator.   That Kohler is the only single cylinder 4 pole set I have ever seen.

It's just strange to me that a v8 can idle right next to me, and I won't even have to raise my voice, but when an engine with less than one eighth the displacement is running nearby, it feels like someone is jackhammering my head..

It's clear that eliminating this noise would improve the RV experience. I can't believe the major generator manufacturers are unaware of this. I could be wrong, but it feels like it would either be impossible or cost prohibitive to solve this noise issue.

Probably cost in an air cooled engine.  I doubt RV sales re a large part of genset sales in the 4-8KW range, and the other buyers (homeowners and contractors) won't pay an extra $50 or so to make the thing quieter.
