Hello, my name is Tony. I’m 53 and a retired mechanic in need of some advice.
Also, if anyone lives in or near Terre Haute IN and is willing to help – please contact me.
If I go there before the Corvair convention; I’ll be there July 6th. If I go there after the convention; I’ll be there July 27th.
Does anyone have knowledge on how to remove the entire 68-72 FWD Toronado power plant and suspension from a MH?
I am picking up another Ultravan coach (see link below) this summer.
It has the factory 68-72 Toronado FWD power plant, front frame with suspension and all.
However, the Toronado FWD is mounted in the rear of the coach.
Because the engine is heavy and installed in the rear of this coach - I might have to rmeove it to make it easier to tow it home.
I know the large GMC coaches used a Toronado FWD. But theirs is mounted in the front.
I’ve never removed one, much less seen one up close before.
But I believe one would drop it out from bottom with the frame, suspension and all, at the same time.
Has anyone removed such a power plant before?
I’m use to working alone. I’ve done lots of engine R&Rs in my life. But never one like this.
Will I be able to do this kind of job on my own?
Will I be able to even get the coach high enough in the driveway to drop it out and move it out from under the coach?
NOTE: Once removed; I will remove the engine and transmission combo as one from the frame and put it in the back of my pickup.
I will reinstall the frame with the suspension back under the coach so I can tow the coach home.
I’m also looking for two outer bad CV joints to mount in the hubs to keep the bearings in place.
Should anyone have some - PLEASE let me know.

Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.

The forum has pictures turned off because some users here are on a text only email system and can not see them. So what we do is to post pictures to the GMCMHphotos site and put a link in the text posting to that site. You can also post them at any other site of your choosing and post a link here. If you use the GMCMHphotos site the photos will be archived for years. If it is not something GMC relevant to be archived then any site will do.

Sounds like the UV you have is a custom job? I thought those all had corvair drive trains.
The only thing I've seen a toronado drive train in the rear was a Fiero dressed up as a ferrari and a hacked up corvair.
You may be in for some head scratching if this is a custom job. If it were me, I'd have it flat bedded like in your other photos. The cost of that over taking it all apart may be worth it. My 2 cents.

Oh boy - I was able to post pictures on the first post.
FYI - most Ultravans are air-cooled Corvair.
The factory made some a Chevy V8.
And the factory did a few Toronado conversions for some caoch owners.
UV520 was a factory Chevy V8 that one of its owners, not the factory, had switched to a Toronado.
The family I purchased it from used it a couple times, many years ago, and then let it sit. YEars latter he went to restore it. However, he got ill and sadly they had to put him in a nursing home. He lived there a couple of years and passed away this past fall.
