This is another one of those stories that ends well. We only missed one stop in Baton Rouge, but I bet I got a lot of problems cured.
Mary drives most, and I navigate, surf (like read GMCnet) and other things. Recently my 1.98 volt meter that plugs into a DC mousehole and lets me watch the house bank has been giving me erratic numbers. Never so far out for long to be worrisome, but still there. Of course, when I can test things everything is just fine.....
Well, coming into Baton Rouge, they stopped being just fine. The display was saying 16.1~2. My antique Fluke 77 said the same until I pushed it into the mousehole wrong and blew that fuse. This was just as we were bailing of I-10 to get pictures of the coach in front of Red Jacket. That is a whole other story and not actually part of this. Right near there was a building with "Something Automotive" and DELCO all over it. I got the parts book out and walked in to ask if they might have parts for a 40 year old alternator. The answer was no, but they knew who would and they directed me to Davilco.
We found Davilco. The counter guy (who is a part owner) came out and looked down and said he had anything I might need (we had already pretty much agreed that it was probably a regulator problem. But, it was too hot for him to take out. I told him not to worry about that and changed into the grubby clothes that I carry for such times.
This guy knows these things. He also know all about 10MT starters. For a very reasonable amount, my alternator got a new and working regulator, a new front bearing and the slip rings trued. I put it back in and he came out when I started up to check things out.
Now I'm sitting here watching (still a little paranoid) a very steady 13.1.
