Does anyone know the dimensions of the o-ring that fits in the channel on the rear control arm bogie pins for a 76 Royale?  The one I removed has the correct i.d. but the o.d. and thickness don't appear to be sufficient.

Thanks,
PB

J.p., if you have access to the Gmc parts manual, Most if not all the "0"
rings are described by od & id and diameter. I don't have my parts book
where I am or I would look it up now. You do have a parts manual, don't you?

JIm,

Yes I do have a parts manual.  The GMC "Motorhome Parts Book".  Maybe it's not the correct one.  It gives the part number 2443965 but no dimensions.  I actually found a company in Illinois that sells that part number ($0.44) but I'd rather get it sooner/locally if possible.  I can't find any relevant info in the maintenance manuals.  Am I missing something.

Thanks
JP

Greetings:

When I did my pins, JimK supplied a 1.234 x 1.512 1/8 o-ring - Or in real life a 1.25 x 1.5 1/8 o-ring – The o-ring will just barley “kiss” a straight edge set on the pin – Unfortunately, the channel is just not wide enough for a 3/16 o-ring – The old pin o-rings also just barley “kissed” a straight edge as well and the new pin 1/8 o-rings appear to be doing their job as no grease has, so far, squeezed through the top hat.

Dang it J.P., I checked both the Dvd parts book and the print version. I
was sure that the diameters were in the descriptions. I WAS WRONG. Best I
can do now is rely on the S.W.A.G. method. If you have the assembly apart,
measure the groove where the ring goes, and the diameter of the pin. Assume
the groove is. 060" deep. The ring should be. 020" or so bigger than that.
.087" is a very common "0" ring diameter. That should get you close.
Install them with that clear silicone grease that is used for suspension
bushings. Sorry for the assumption on my part that the specs were in the
parts book.

Jim,

The groove in the pin is wider than deep.  So I thought the original o-ring might have a non-standard cross-section or something.  Apparently that's not required.  Carl P. went through this drill and used a  0.125" wide by 1.50 o.d. o-ring.  That would be AS No. 218 in the Harbor Freight 382 piece o-ring assortment.  The o.d. on this o-ring is the same diameter as the bogie pin.  I would have thought (as you suggest) that the o.d. would be slightly larger than the pin diameter to insure a positive seal.  But I guess that's not necessary for this case.

It seems like there are a lot of details missing from the parts book.  Luckily we have GMCNet.

Thanks Carl,

I think I made this too complicated in my mind.  I get nervous when I'm putting something together that I don't want to take apart again later.
