I have a 78 with a 403. When I found out what I had. I went to a good friend that had a salvage yard. He had a 455 in an Olds that had just come in. I went out and started it. Here was a core to start with. Then I became aware of the 3.07 final drive. So the first mod that I made was to get a 3.70 from Jim K. I pull a 24 ft enclosed trailer a lot. Gross weight runs at 19,000 lbs. I found that the 403 was up to the task. I found that my vac level went up along with my mileage. I took the 455 back, and got a 403 as a backup. Hope to never us it. Been in the Rockies west of Denver with my open trailer with a car on it.

Well, if your so inclined, the Cadillac 500 is also available to stick into
a GMC. :)

yup
here is some info ( no advantage:>)
but some do it because they can
special
mounts
headers
tranny
etc
here is an old post on the subject
--------------------
.
.-----------------------------
---
*Dyno tests*
----------------------------------------------------------
I was digging through some old GM test data and thought I would share the
following:
*Olds 455* test data with an uncertain pedigree (Toro or not? Test
conditions?) and it showed a torque at 2800 and below of about *398*. No
data below 2000, but other tests implied a peak torque at 1200 to 1600 rpm.
Peak hp was 234 at 3600.
*Cadillac 500 EFI* - peak torque *395* at 1200 and 1600 rpm. Peak hp 225
at 3600. The engine was knock limited and spark was retarded about 10
degrees from MBT at most rpms. Both of these are consistent with other big
GM engines built at the time(except for the knock-limited part). Max
torquewas always below 2000 rpm and peak hp was never above 4000.
That's not
counting performance engines like the Chevy 427 or the Chrysler Hemi, of
course.
Olds 350 EFI (Cadillac Seville) - peak torque 290 at 1200, peak power 190
at 4400 and still rising. Not knock limited.
If the Cad 500 were tested on today's fuels would it be knock-limited?
Don't know.
.
Hopefully this data will be useful to somebody. GaryC
-------------------------------
I love, ( I do it because I can), but it would be hard to make an informed
decision on these engines based upon the reported performance vs the
dynotest data.....

Ray,
I haven't done any actual performance comparisons, but the "feel" of the
coach is entirely different with the Cad500. Before, even with a slightly
"warmed up" 455, the coach still felt heavy, especially for the first 10'
of travel. With the 500, that heaviness is gone; throttle response is
instantaneous. And I can't credit that to gear ratio nor torque converter
because those remained the same during the initial installation. The coach
feels to the throttle much more like the Cadillacs it's always compared to.
Is that worth the trouble? Probably only if one's got to have something to
keep them entertained, just "cause I can". Just like the EFI, the 1-Ton
front suspension, the gas powered dining table, the completely redesigned
HVAC and dash, the 6-wheel disc brakes, and all the other "unnecessary"
changes. :-)

Ken -
Any chance Cadillac used the same trick Mopar used on the '72 cars - they changed the throttle linkage such that you were actually opening the throttle appreciably more on initial movement than in the past. It kept the 'feel' of responsiveness even as the engines became choked of for smog requirements.

Nope, I don't think so -- it's the low speed torque. When I had to have a
new torque converter during my last exercise, the manufacturer's "expert",
hearing my configuration, suggested a 1200 rpm stall speed! I'm not sure
they really got it that low, but it IS responsive.

Bob, the 403 is the best one out there. By far the most reliable and great for those who travel at higher speeds--plenty of extionsion for passing, etc. No worries about intakes cracking.

strange:
from what I have read
Dr. Olds (Joe Mondello) never cared for the 403
for one thing, he felt not having a water jacket between the cyls, was a
weakness. (viper cooling?)
to bad, we will never know what Dick Patterson thinks

Bob, the 403 is the best one out there. By far the most reliable and great for those who travel at higher speeds--plenty of extionsion for passing, etc. No worries about intakes cracking.

Bob,
I am so glad to hear you say this. I am tired of hearing that yet another fairly fresh 455 has come apart; valves, bearings, piston, etc. If my 18k 455 didn't use so much oil I would gladly trade for a 403; if I could bypass my conscience. I am beginning to think the 455 is a good boat anchor.

Dog gone George. I hoped you had solved that problem. Might be time to visit the engine builder.
