Bob,

Here's some info I sent in awhile back regarding rebuilt carbs for the GMC.

Regards,
Rob M.

Subject: [GMCnet] Holley Remanufactured Quadrajet Carbs

G'day,

I sent the following query to Holley's Reman Division Tech Support email:

I would like to know the Rochester OEM part numbers for the carbs Sales
Number: 64-7256 & 64-7259 to verify that they are the correct carbs for a
GMC Motorhome. Thank you, Rob

I got the following response:

7045254 = GMC
7045554 = GMC
7043254 = GMC
17056258
17058250
17058253
17058553
17059258
17059259
17055645
17055635
17058254 = GMC
17065609
17057258

From the info that has been provided in previous GMCnet messages I added =
GMC.

Someone that needs a rebuilt carb will have to order one and see what they
get and how it works. Considering the fact that Pace Performance will sell
it for $208.69 (including core charge) it would be worth a shot. If it
doesn't work properly I'd think it would be covered by warranty.

Assuming that Pace is not "The Pirates" Larry was referring to! ;-)

STOP THE PRESSES!

Look what I just stumbled on to on the Holley Reman website:

http://www.holley.com/BrowseCatalogs.asp?Catalog=Reman&Page=261

The first numbers are listed here and continue to page 264.

Rochester
O.E. Number Sales No.
7043254 64-7256
7045254 64-7256
7045554 64-7256
17057254 Not listed (CA Carb)
17057559 Not listed
17058254 64-7259
17058559 Not listed (CA Carb)

Now whether they have these carbs in stock is another question!

Here's the contact info I would suggest that someone in the USA give them a
call and see what they can find out:

We constantly get approached by people that say they know the exact carb to
sell us.
We bought them and found it would not work. Had to use our legal beagles to
get them to refund it.
We sell Dick Patterson's Springfield Carbs and also our own.
Our re builder has been working on only carburetors and can even rebuilt
warped units that others throw way.
We know they are good as we rent them to people that ate having problem
passing smog test.

Rob I think it depends on the condition on your carb, it is a pretty simple task to change the jet and the rods and you could use the ones from your old carb or buy new ones, other differences could be the air orifice, but I do not belive there will be any large differences.

And yes they could be junk as Jim says, however the original 7043254 is hard to come by and some companies take $ 280 in core charge and $ 390 for the job, without a core it is starting to get expencive for me so I would rather take my chances and buy one for $ 237 and open it to check that it is up to specs.

I believe there has been previous discussion that GMCMH specific carbs may have parts unigue to the MH carb, beyond jets, rods, hangers. Maybesome passages, etc. I believe that is why Dick Paterson will only rebuild MHp carbs. I believe it has been said it is NOT possible tomake non MH carb into a MH carb.

I've heard Dick Paterson say repeatedly that he's tried everything he knows
to make even Toronado carbs work satisfactorily on the MH, without success.
If he, with his knowledge, experience, and equipment, can't do it, I sure
wouldn't try. EFI, especially with EBL, is much more amenable to tuning,
albeit more expensive.

Espen,

I don't know enough about the Q-Jet to disagree with you so I'll wait and see what you say about the $237 carb.

I sent a core I bought for $100 from Michael Bozardt of GMCRECS (closed down) and sent it to Dick Paterson. For $390 I got a nice
rebuilt carb back.

I bolted it on and, set the idle mixture and throttle position and that was that!

Regards,
Rob M.

Even at $600 for a new carb. Its still inexpensive.I got an Auto Zone $99 carb for one of my Caddys once.Guess what? It was fine and stayed with the car for years. What makes it motorhome specific?Besides adnoids on high altitude, and big jets/squirters and such?

There are some suttle detail that people miss.
We always deal with core charges when people have sent in warped or wrong
cores.
It is like a speeding ticket, if you tell us what help you need, we are
flexible.
So don't tell me that that is what it is unless I give the final word.
If you have dealt with over 100 carbs in few years, I feel we know more
than lot of you that are so much smarter after few experiences.
Wish you guys best.
I know Dick Patterson will call me and laugh with me.

I was on my way to leave this tread alone, not very hard to see the agenda from some in this and simular treads, but that is ok, I really do not mind, however what I do not like is some people making others look stupid.

I really hope Jim and Dick will get a good laugh, it is allways fun to laugh of others when you think you are sitting on top of the mountain, Thankfully you do not know me or my experience through the years.

I do not know who will have the last laugh, it is not important to me, but I know that it is important to treat other people with respect, I am in this forum becouse of my interest of the GMC MH, to get information and maybe share what I learn and from my experience.

Scanning posts, I'm really not sure what this is about and as it seems to be unwound I probably don;t want to know so lets leave it there.

One thing on carbs and this statement in itself may cause a pile of comebacks but let me give you one truth about carbs and this totally holds true on the Qjuet we use:

Rochester built a pile of carbs for all different uses and motors.  There are series of castings but-- and this is where many may push back-- if the carb will fit on the intake-- we have a unique "concave" intake which will not allow any linkage below the bottom of the carb-- but if all that matches, most any Qjet carb can be set up to run with our 455 or 403 motors.  There are differences that is true but if you know what motor you are going to put it on, a good carb remanufacturer can make the unit fulfil spec..  The carb does not HAVE to be only the narrow numbers we call fitted for our application.

I know as soon as I say this there will be those that are going to roast what I'm saying, I got this directly from the carb remanufacturing folks that go over my carbs.  It's all they do-- well, they do mess with FI so I won;t hold that against them but I do have to bow to their knowledge.  I called this morning just to make sure I am repeating correctly, the manager there said he uses cady carbs all the time for Chevy application.  The most important thing about this is the carb not only gets a gasket kit but any hard parts inside that are worn get replaced then the carb is set up on a flow bench then a running motor and then exhaust gasses are checked.  This way every carb has ben flowed and run in and tested.  I like to have YOUR carb returned to you but I could send one they had built and it will work just fine.

I have supplied well over 100 carbs using this method with no troubles.  We retir also an electric choke for blocking the crossover.  Most cost $285.  This is not an ad for business, just giving something to compare with.

Hope this helps,

Jim Bounds
