Great Job Bob!!!!

What a pleasure to see what you did for Linda. She will certainly enjoy traveling a great deal more with this change!!! What a great way to share the enjoyment of the GMC together!!

I have a question about the sliding window. I would expect that the glass is tempered which would preclude being able to cut the glass size. I know I would be reluctant to try that route because of the risk I would shatter everything. Did you just allow the extra overlap, and does it seal at the overlap effectively?

Great job Bob.

Couple of suggestions:

The fixed glass could be replaced with a plexiglass type replacement.

If you want to prevent the "unauthorized" opening of the original glass, cut a piece of wood (such as a yardstick) to the proper lenght and place in the moving glass track to prevent it from being slid open.

I have used this in hot weather to leave a side window open a couple of inches for circulation but still secure from anyone opening it further.

Well, I would expect Jim Bounds to have a good grasp of the situation, and
it seems he does, as his products target those areas.

Just got home. To upset to say much now. Everything below the floor was totally untouched. Plus the Gen and LP area. Tires fine. The new spare tire that I put on Fri morning is gone at the top. Neb. Fire Marshall didn't seem to find a cause from what I understood. He said he found hydrocarbons on the floor. So he think a excellerent was used to start the fire. And I'm the first person of interest in an arson case now. On the trip home I had lots of time to think this out. R-22, and the oil in the roof A/C has hydrocarbons. I'm thinking as the roof A/C fell into the fire. The copper soldered line could have come apart. Releasing the hydrocarbons onto the floor. Mike, and Billie Kelley stayed up with me until the Fire Marshall left at 1:30 AM. Thanks to the Kelley's, and Matt Sladek for offering their GMC's for us to go to Rapids City. And to Jim K and Paul Bennett for their phone calls. As Paul had one burn. And Jim has seen this also. And all the e-mail here today. As to the arson thing. I can't comprehend that thought.Bob Dunahugh

Bob,

I can empathize with you 100% regarding being upset, you poured a lot of time and effort into that GMC to make it comfortable for
Linda.

Your theory on hydrocarbons on the floor makes sense and is a possibility.

Arson with you as the prime suspect is RIDICULOUS! However, be advised that I bought an engine, transmission, and final drive from a
gentleman up in Canada who's GMC WAS torched! The fire marshal there noted that they found accelerant on the drivers seat. They
believed someone tossed a "Molotov cocktail" in through the drivers window on to the drivers seat.

As has been noted in a number of earlier responses the main thing is that both you and Linda were not involved in the fire!

I'm sure you'll be back in another GMC before long.

Regards,
Rob M.

This subject reminds us all of the importance of the constant maintenance
need for these 40 year old coaches. I am NOT SPEAKING ABOUT BOB'S coach
specifically here.
When you use a mechanical fuel pump on the Olds, and you get one meant for
a a/c equipped toronado, it will have two outlets. Only one is needed on
our coach, and the correct one only has one outlet. Many times when I
inspect a coach I am working on, I will find the wrong pump used and a
short piece of rubber fuel line blocked with a bolt and clamped with hose
clamps not suitable for the application. When the hose deteriorates, or
the clamps loosen, they leak fuel and the fan blows air on it and it sprays
it onto the headers. Big hazards. Another one that comes to mind is an
in-line plastic see through filter in the supply line to the carb from the
mechanical pump. Again connected with hose and worm drive hose clamps. Both
of the examples I have given have caused complete destruction of several
coaches. If yours is so equipped, my advice to you would be to correct
them. NOW, TODAY, NOT WHEN YOU GET AROUND TO IT.

A sad event. I cringe every time I hear about a TZE burning.

On the hydrocarbon issue. Wouldn't we expect find hydrocarbon traces due to the amount of composite ( plastics) used in the construction of these coaches? With many of our interior upgrades using even more plastics (FRP etc. ) these days, testing for hydrocarbons becomes a complicated affair. Unless the testing is designed to detect only gasoline/kerosene based hydrocarbons, I can't see the test being all that conclusive. I think some detailed research on the subject might uncover some helpful info that may benefit Bob in his defence of innocence.

Les,

With all due respect to the fire marshal, it beggars belief that anyone would think that someone that puts the amount of time it
takes to restore and maintain a "normal" GMC would torch it! If he understood the number of hours on top of that which Bob put in to
make it easily accessible to Linda he should have his head examined!

Unless of course Bob had it insured for MILLIONS!

A sad event. I cringe every time I hear about a TZE burning.

On the hydrocarbon issue. Wouldn't we expect find hydrocarbon traces due to the amount of composite ( plastics) used in the
construction of these coaches? With many of our interior upgrades using even more plastics (FRP etc. ) these days, testing for
hydrocarbons becomes a complicated affair. Unless the testing is designed to detect only gasoline/kerosene based hydrocarbons, I
can't see the test being all that conclusive. I think some detailed research on the subject might uncover some helpful info that may
benefit Bob in his defence of innocence.

Rapid release of pressure in an R12 or R22 in a flammable environment will cause a momentary fireball as the oil is atomized into the atmosphere. Much like a spray can aerosol would but on a larger scale. That said, pretty much everything will burn-- if the temp is high enough. I have to agree with Les, There is a wealth of HC materials in a GMC or any other vehicle land, air or sea going. Plus weren't they away from the coach in a restaurant when this happened?
