She raised all the BWDs from 8 week puppies. Today was the end of her string, we had to Send her on her journey.

My condolences, Johnny.
I still remember the stray cat that adopted us and I had to
have put down for cancer of the jaw at age nine. I held him
as the vet administered the shot and he died peacefully and
was then free of pain.
Almost wenty years now and I still think of him. He was a
very special critter!

Johnny,
So sorry to hear the bad news. I grew up with a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. We got him when I was about 10. He was the smartest dog I have ever seen. I can tell you some amazing stories about that dog (Rowdy was his name). My dad was devastated when he had to have him put down.

We lost both of our dogs last year (Jasper and Clyde) to cancer. I still look around the house remembering where they use to sit and watch me. Now those spaces are empty.
We have a new rescue doggie that looks like Clyde. He is not a replacement but rather a new member of our family with a style and temperament all his own.

When you need a friend that is non-judgmental get a dog. He will loves you no matter what. Truly a man's best friend.
Dogs have Masters, Cats have Servants.
Cats are like girls; When they want attention, they want it now, and when they don't want attention, they will hurt you.
It's always sad to hear of one's companion leaving us behind. The forgotten toy under the bed, the missed stain in the carpet, the special treat in the pantry.
I miss my Cocker and it's been a long time. My cats miss me because it is snack time.

Tom,
I've heard it expressed as Dogs have Owners, Cats have Staff. ;-)
Both Stumpy and Shadow are affectionate, however, it has limits, they walk off when they've have had enough, kinda like people.

When you introduced me to the Phipps family kitties I thought they were sweet.

Animals are so special. Good for the psyche and the soul.
Dogs are certainly more interactive (they really demand your attention) but cats are great for the lazier among us (like ME).
I recently put our 17 years old girl to sleep and hoping the 18 year old boy still has some good miles ('tho he's slowing down).
Love and enjoy 'em every day!

My Smokey Kitty died 1 day before I left of the fall GMCMI rally in 2010. He was just short of 22 years old. Based on that you have a few more years left with your 17 year old.

Each of my BWDs has his personal cat. It is an interesting dynamic.
