Springtime has me thinking about my coach again and my stalled Onan ignition project. I had put some thought into making an adjustable mounting plate for the Pertronix ignition, but life got in the way. Has anyone else taken the baton and run with it?

I see Jim K has an MSD ignition module on his website that looks pretty complete - has anyone taken a look at this?

It looks like it would certainly improve the weak spark these old trolls have lived with for so long.

Larry,

I think if you'll just install the Pertronix IAW the instructions in my,
and other, photo albums you'll be so happy with the result that you'll
wonder why you ever worried about making the mount adjustable.

We have noticed that with the MSD unit it is simple to install and the fact
that the unit fires twice makes it run very well. MSD units are very
popular for that feature.I think after the first, it fores 20 degree later
in case the first misfires.
You can also open up the plug gap to .30 instead of the standard 20.

VEK2543 - Velleman Electronic Transistor Ignition Kit $25.95 for those of you who are handy with a soldering iron. This is a point triggered CD ignition system that will work on Mr. Onan. I used one in my first coach. Makes a nice hot spark, you can open up the plug gap and really take advantage of the hot spark.
The downside of using the Onan's point as a trigger, it is not very accurate, That is the main reason Onan's engineers had to change both the dwell and plug gap to make a reliable ignition.
IF I still had an Onan, I would follow Ken's lead and go with the Pertronix system.

Does the accuracy of the spark trigger affect fuel consumption measurably?

All I can say is that Ken Burton and a couple of other guys installed my pertronix. It has never missed a lick. We use the Onan for running the roof air during the summer only. I also fire it up once a month and turn on air to give it a load for a few minutes.

Gene,

The Blue Streak's PO removed the Onan and installed a Chinese 6500 Watt / 240VAC / 50Hz generator. Peter Bailey has an 6000W Onan
down in Adelaide he will bring up to Sydney. Once I get my hands on that I can work on making a Pertronics mount.

Regards,
Rob M.

While probably a neat idea, I really question the need for this adjustable mount. Once the ignition is mounted there is nothing to wear or stretch or move. It should stay in adjustment forever with no additional attention required.

i also do not see the need for added features

more of,
- a standard mount with
-low profile to reduce noise
- easy attachment for the novice
- everything in one kit
--magnets
-- sensor
-- mounting
-- wires
-- min impact mounting

I think Onans are going to be here for a long time.
- with the points removed
- run on propane to reduce maintenance and pumps and filters
- these will run for the life of our GMCs

Ken,

You are correct, however, what I discovered was that if you mount it to the inner fan housing and then remove the inner fan housing
and reinstall it the pickup doesn't wind up in the same place.

Next time I see you I'll show you what I've come up with. All I need is an Onan in Sydney to work it out.

Regards,
Rob M.
