We went to the regional Spring RV show mostly to see what $60k buys now. But Dave & I were also looking for available bolt-on system monitoring systems like the digipanel (none there) and some innovative design tricks.

On the later, I didn't see much except some chassis-level storage areas fitted out with plastic sumps and drain plugs. I doubt that was a new innovation but it did catch my eye as being handy. Just throw the grandkid in there and hose him down.

And while I can definitely see the logic behind it I can't say I like the Port-A-Jon feature where the bathroom has an exterior door. It looked weird.

Yeah, While shopping for a new TT, we saw a lot of rigs with an exterior door next to the commode. Just looked wrong. They were usually in the toy haulers, the idea is to give the dusty kids access to the potty without tracking dirt into the rest of the coach past the plastic rock wall fireplace and kitchen Island.

These Toy Haulers are really getting over the top. Whats' worse, most are painted dark colors, with black usually near the top and the roof. Really? a 30+ ft RV in 110* desert sun out at the dunes with ONE air conditioner and a Black roof and more windows than a GMC?

Prepare to see these things on the drastic markdown lot next summer.

Dave has pictures of one. COMPLETELY black, except for the huge red-n-silver "Avenger" graphic on the front end over the tongue. We couldn't figure who exactly that was being marketed --wannabe rockstar, maybe. Pro video gamer? (No Xbox, Dave checked.). It had the wallet-melting rear patio deck version of the toy-hauler ramp, though.

I figured it would take a 50kw Cat generator to power all the AC units that thing would need even in the Carolinas in the summer. Arizona? Makes me sweat just to think about it.

In Arizona probably would need a Refer unit from a 53' trailer.

I recently went to the Seattle RV show and was disappointed at amount of RV support, maintenance, and equipment suppliers that were present. Pretty much none. Not a lot for the guy who just wanted to upgrade or improve his existing rig.

Plenty of brand new large towed units. Barely 20% were self propelled units (Class A, B, or Cs).

Yeah, I was really hopeful about finding some "neat junk" vendors, maybe an independent inventor/entrepreneur or two. (IMO, one of the greatest assets of the GMC cult.) It was really disappointing.

>20%

Maybe a little higher here, but only one pusher. And it was a lower-$$ one. Good number of Class Cs ...mostly Fords.

Dave and I were polite. We didn't openly mock anyone, anyway. Even so, one salesman did acost Dave when he overheard Dave comment that it would take a 1-ton pickup to pull a HUGE 5th wheeler. Really, we we just talking between ourselves and this guy almost literally jumped in to dispel any notion that his rig was just too damn big to pull with a Ranger, hhh!

If you ever get a chance to hit one of the yearly FMCA conventions, you will see it all. They have shows that rival Quartzsite. Of course, the Dothan convention is going to be where its at in less than 2 weeks. See you there.

We joke about the exterior access to the toilet but really, it's a practical idea that is consistant with what RV's are all about.

Your kids are outside where they belong and maybe you don't want them romping through the camper.

To me the really ridiculous new "FEATURE" is the external television. When i first saw it i just thought the vendor put it on the side of the coach to run a tradeshow video- but no, it is an installed feature. And we saw external TV's on rigs of every size and shape.

It's supposed to be camping. You're supposed to be roasting marshmallos with the kids or enjoying a beer with the bride and watching a fire.

What could possible be on television that's better than that?

RV's are about traveling and camping but the industry can't really improve on those things so they keep coming up with dumb ways to make it less and less like leaving home.

I'm guessing it's for tailgating? I went to undergrad at Ole Miss, and
the college football tailgaiting culture has to be seen to be
believed. You'd never get a rig lke that into The Grove, but for a
parking lot outside a big stadium, I could see one of these big fifth
wheel rigs set up with a giant grill, a bunch of lawn chairs, and the
TV running on the side, while aging football fans relive their own
glory days.

That makes some sense but how many flat screens are usable in bright sunlight? (i really don't know, i don't watch TV outside)

Now that i think about, i did not see much evidence that the RV industry is really thinking about tailgating.

Dave,

I reckon people that head for the hills with all the gear strapped to their backs are "camping."

I'll bet dollars to donuts when it comes to any kind of vehicle they'd echo your sentiments when you say; "THEY keep coming up with
dumb ways to make it less and less like leaving home. ;-)

I've seen a number of people watching them and when it is bright they put out their awning.

I don't even allow a TV in my coach. Bad enough I have a cell phone, even if it's usually off

My coaches bathroom is only for emergencies, dry camping or night time, otherwise use the campgrounds facilities, unless you want to help me dump it!

Sitting around inside or out watching tv is not what I want to do when I go camping
