• Water heater has been fully rebuilt with a brand new stainless steel tank from
the guy in Canada and all new parts. Just used the old brackets and end covers
but painted them to be nice looking.
• All the dark walls have been painted with matching beige Krylon. The coach has
a nice earth tone color scheme now. It is a must see to appreciate.
• I replaced most of the drain plumbing with 1.5” pipe. What was there was 1.25”
and you cannot find this size anywhere. In fact, I tried to use regular home
depot and Lowes household stuff whenever I could to avoid having to pay the
RV store surcharge on everything.
• ALL the PEX plumbing parts come from Lowes, and they are all the expensive
removable ones. They also DON’T LEAK!!!! Great stuff.
Mechanical:
• Professionally rebuilt and upgraded Transmission by Manny Travao.
o Includes “Power Drive”
o 3.21: differential. Original 3.07 is available if you want that with the
coach.
• New CV Joints, boots 2004, less than 3K miles
• New Front and rear wheel bearings 2004, less than 3K miles
• New Brake lines all around 2004, less than 3K miles
• New front Brake Rotors 2004, and full brake job less than 3K miles
• New ball joints and tie rod ends 2004, less than 3K miles
• All new shocks 2004, less than 3K miles
• Nuts, Bolts (all stainless) misc hoses, etc.
• Original 455 Engine:
The Good:
• Has Pro Remanufactured carburetor by Jim Bounds 2012
• Has Rockwell Aluminum Intake Manifold
• Re-sealed valve covers
• Exhaust bolt tabs
• New Timing Chain and Gears 2011 less than 1000 miles
• New Water pump 2011 less than 1000 miles
• New Fuel Pump 2011 less than 1000 miles
• Rebuilt starter 2011 less than 1000 miles
• Alternator protection cable
• New hoses, belts, all around
• Alternator new 2003, less than 3000 miles
The Bad
• Just started having some issues. Low power, some noise, may be distributor
advance/timing issue, may be something else. No time to work on it. Runs,
Drives, but wouldn’t drive more than across town until It gets looked at.
• Dead Dash AC Compressor. May be just the clutch, don’t know, never used it.
• Leaks a bit of oil at the pan. Too much trouble to fix.
• Steering Box leaks, have new proportional one included but not installed.
Current one works just fine, and drives better than many other GMC’s
according to their owners.
Overall:
I bought this coach in 2004 as a project, when I worked only 3-4 days a week and had a lot of time off. I gutted most of it, rebuilt just about everything over the years, but never really used it. Just don’t have time or money now. I am still working more than full time. It has been a labor of love, I have planned and re-planned the changes and upgrades to death, and installed brand new systems when available, and the best rebuilt when not (Transmission, generator, water heater, etc.)
It still needs paint, but I have already painted the window frames, which made it look 1000 times better, and the body just needs a little TLC. Most of the stripes have been removed. This was always an Arizona/Southern California coach, has no rot, rust, or corrosion like many (My 2009 Pickup from the east coast has much more) and has good bones. Only the usual surface rust that is really not even rust, but mostly dust and dirt. Even with the old paint, I get someone looking at it every time I stop for gas. Never fails!
I still have the original storage pod for the roof. It is included if you want it. It has the Factory Ladder on the rear, and an extended bumper for loading stuff. I found it handy for my fire washtub and bicycles.
There are a few little items still needing attention in the interior, such as the headliner above the hallway, I never really decided on how I wanted to do it so it didn’t get done. Better not done than half baked. The rear has been converted to permanent bed, the walls are all lined with that really dense foam board insulation from HD or Lowes, but not covered yet.
It has the central vac and it works but the attachments are aftermarket. They do fit. This is a really nice feature. My trailer needs one.
It has the original single black tank, It is plumbed for a Macerator underneath and the macerator is staying. I decided these things are probably too icky to remove. All the slide valves are new in 2010. I will also include the tank monitoring system I bought but have not yet installed.
I added a pull out trash can under the sink, and an extra drawer under the stove for pots and pans.
I built in the upper cabinets. I have not made doors yet… Time again. Simple to do, was going to make sliding doors like in the bathroom.
Bathroom is nice and clean. I added a separate faucet for the shower, which I never have used. I also added a second drain to drain grey water outside the coach to save space in the black tank Like Dan and Teri did.
I rebuilt and reconfigured the propane compartment to use two regular BBQ bottles. It has a slide out tray for both tanks, and an auto switching valve plus proper floor vent holes. Much more usable space now, I ended up with a nice “Basement” type storage area which holds a lot of stuff like BBQ, camp stove, tarps, chairs, etc. It was for a pull out kitchen I never built. For this reason, I don’t need the roof pod. There is also a large space under the bed accessible from inside the coach for additional storage. A large cooler fits nicely there. This is the single reason I no longer need the Roof Pod.
The Onan runs but has had some issues starting. Needs a new control board, but you can run it using the jumper method. It will run three AC units (Tested it at the rebuilders shop this way) and runs strong.
I have over $22K invested in mostly NEW systems and parts, all it needs is a paint job and whatever ails the engine fixed and you have a good solid coach.
Everyone will tell you that no matter how much you spend on a GMC coach, you will be $30-40K into it when you get it all said and done. Whether you buy a $5K coach and replace everything (Like I did) or one that is “already done” for $25K, there is still something that it needs or has that “Gotcha” coming. Whether it be engine, paint, wheels (Yes, a lot of $20K+ coaches still have the 16.5” steel wheels on them, which are getting harder to find. Wheels and tires for this coach together are $3.5K with Used wheels . This one has $2K worth of New Michelin LTX tires, not cheap trailer tires or Pep boys specials which only last 3 years (Ask me how I know that too).
All this coach needs in my opinion to be trusted to drive cross country is an engine. I always stayed close to home, within 150 miles, “just in case” a $5K newly rebuilt Koba GMC motorhome engine from Jim Bounds (GMC Coop) would make this coach 100% reliable, and paint and a few little finishes inside would make it beautiful.
Put YOUR motor in it from YOUR trusted guy and paint it whatever color YOU want. There’s your $25K coach that is ready to go.

I love this coach, my wife does not. If I didn't have to spend $$ to store and insure it, I'd keep her, but my time and funds are limited, and she deserves better than to sit in a storage lot and rot after all the work I have done. Everything I did was with the mentality, I want this to last into my retirement (I am 45) and beyond, so I was anal about everything.
If you go to the photo site and look up album "It has begun" by "chrisc" You will see what I have done. I am keeping the one of 15K carriers. Sorry, they are no longer available, and it is going on my TT. What you will get is a 2010 Dometic from my TT. It works fine. I've uploaded new pix.
I can turn you on to a motor with 85K miles and spare trans if you are interested as well. Would get her underway. I just don't have the time...
