Buskin,
I use the SMI Stay in play that is advertised in the FMCA magazine.It is radio controlled between the coach and towed. It is relatively easy to install and very easy to put in the towed when you are towing. No physical connection between the coach and the towed. I think it runs about $800 or in that range.

No dog in this fight, but if you have the 7-pin trailer power
plug, couldn't you use the 13V "hot" lead to keep the towd's
battery charged any time the coach was running?

If adjusted properly it is NOT "all or nothing". There is a pendulum inside that senses how fast the motorhome is stopping and automatically adjusts the braking speed of the toad. There is a sensitivity switch and a pressure regulator that should be adjusted (once) to provide the braking you want.
In order to prevent the battery from going dead I ran a fused line from the positive of my house battery to an unused pin in the plug to the toad battery. It has worked well this way for several years.

I've got the Unified Tow brake on my Honda CRV. I like it because there's no box or other stuff to move around once it's installed. It does require some time to install, probably about a day depending on how you deal with the lights on the toad. I wired in a separate set of bulbs to the rear lenses to avoid having to deal with the CRV's electrical system. It keeps the battery charged in the toad, so no issues about that. Here's the link.

I got a Brake Buddy and in addition to the wiring for the magnetic towd
lights, I hooked up a hot and ground to a lighter socket and ran it into the
car with the tail light wires. I plug the Brake Buddy into that lighter
socket and it runs off juice from the MH.
