I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work if you are adequately
creative..<g> And it sounds like a good idea to me.

Joe,

I've got a rear bath Birchaven, essentially identical to your Royale in
that respect. Since I'm 6'2" tall, I wanted more height than original. I
installed a new tub in '98, but lowered it as much as the structure
allowed. You can gain about 4" more than I have IF you can position the
drain and P-trap to avoid the frame and the exhaust pipe -- a TALL order.
You may have to fabricate a custom drain.

You will also have to contend with the fact that if the floor of your
shower is at the plywood floor level, it will be only 1"-2" above the top
of the gray water tank. On an upgrade, with a near-full tank, that
distance may become negative -- allowing gray water to run into the tub.
This may be a place to use a small, pumped, holding tank.

Remember also, that the step in the bathtub covers the non-level floor at
the rear of the coach -- your shower pan can't be level all the way to the
rear wall.

Good luck; keep us posted (w/pictures) on your solution.

OH Yeah: I lined the walls of my shower with FRP, laminated to plywood and
Masonite (on the curved outside wall). Even the butt-jointed and lightly
caulked forward outer corner still looks perfect after 14 years.

Joe, sounds like a very creative and useful project. Please photo document your progress for the group. Frankly, I never did see any use for the tiny tub, except washing the cat, or dog. My Avion has a stand up shower only, and I like it like that.
I did see a well made shower in a GMC several years ago, using a shower pan that had high walls. I believe that the owner made it for the spot. Used regular shower walls from a big box store for the walls, trimmed to fit.
Wish that I could remember who it was, but only saw it in passing.

Tom,

What you don't use the seat over the wheel well in the shower?

Maybe you're in the same boat as I am; if I were to sit down on it my knees would scream blue bloody murder and God knows how long
it would take me to stand up!

Regards,
Rob M.

Joe.

This drain valve might be the answer to limited space...

http://www.jazzsales.com/index.php?route=product/product&keyword=hepvo&product_id=774

Here is an old thread about the valve and some experiences by other GMC owners --

Thanks for the responses - so far. Hopefully someone will have a brilliant idea on how this can be done.

Ken, Dennis Sexton told me about yours and sent me the link to your photos - and your's looks great. I am going to use FRP on the ceiling and walls, including the shower. I was thinking about fabricating three sides from the FRP and using fiberglass to seal the two corners where they meet - in effect, building a shower stall that would fit the pan I get exactly. One end will block the window but that would not be a big deal. I have 38 inches on the floor. My fresh water tank is mounted above the sloped part of the back floor in a cabinet. I suppose I need to get some pictures on the photo site. By the way, is there a limit to the photos that I should place there? I take a lot of photos and would like to share as many of them as appropriate.

Ken, I have been thinking about how low I can make the drain because of the holding tank. The trap is currently cut into the floor all the way to the metal under pan.

Tom, I wish we could find the guy who fabricated his shower. I have considered that but it would be a lot of work and time. I went to Lowes and looked at some of their shower units but it looked like I would have to do so much cutting that I could probably fabricate one as quickly. The problem is getting the exact size and many of them have supports formed into the corners that make it a pain to work with them.

So, with all that said, maybe everyone will keep their thinking cap on about this and help me come up with a solution.

The last convention in Dothan had a highly modified interior coach parked behind us. They had moved the shower to the hallway. Very creative. Maybe they will be in Dothan again this month. When shower was not needed they moved the pan, the best I recall, and opened the curtains.
One reason to attend conventions and rallies. We get to see some really cool stuff. Many of these creative people never get on the internet so we can't see their coaches any other way.
We are less than 3 weeks away. Open House days are really neat for newer owners looking to do something special to their coaches.
