G'day,
I just posted a photo of how to calculate the intake manifold height for a GMC.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/random-photos/p47792-gmc-toronado-intake.html
This should come in handy to calculate how much you'll have to raise the engine cover f you change to an aftermarket manifold.
Please review it and to make sure my logic and calculations are correct.

If the carb pad and the thermostat flat are parallel then I think your calculations are correct.
Anyone considering the space may want to look at the front body pads since their thickness affects the room. And we have seen coaches that did not have the relief cut correctly into the hatch cover.

Rob,
It does not change your final answer -- but I believe you have A and B reversed for the Toronado intake.
Interesting to note that B minus A for the performer is 1.10 and for the Toronado 1.38 suggesting that the carb would sit at a different angle.

Robert Mueller wrote on Thu, 28 February 2013 18:04 | Dennis,
Good point, yes they are.
Here are calculations comparing the OEM Toronado manifold and Edelbrock Performer:
Edelbrock:
A = 4.40"
B = 5.50"
A (4.40) + B (5.50) = 9.90
9.90 / 2 = 4.95
OEM Toronado:
A = 2.72"
B = 1.34"
A (2.72) + B (1.34) = 4.06
4.06 / 2 = 2.03
The carb pad on the Performer is 2.92" higher. That sounds right as IIRC it has been noted here that you need to build a dog house
that's 4.00 high to fit one.

Rob M.

Rob,
Looks great. Thank you for documenting the differences.
How does the Performer work with a 403? Do I remember correctly that you do not need to raise the hatch? If correct, there is certainly a lot of head space in the engine compartment with the 403 -- which I presume should affect vapor lock, under floor heat and general compartment heat.

Dennis,
Thanks for reviewing it and you're welcome.
When I was buying parts for the Caddy 500 Jerry Potter (the Joe Mondello of Caddy 500's) told me that a Performer on a Caddy 500
would get me about 40 HP. He did not say in what rpm range, however. I'd guess it would be in the higher range.

Rob M.

Rob,
I thought perhaps it might be useful to include a link to SteveF's album on how to raise the hatch -- for those who may be interested in pursuing an Edelbrock manifold. They could also follow Steve's engine install to see how he routed fuel lines and fresh air intake hose. This way all the details are in one thread.

In my 403 OEM setup, the air cleaner is right up against the hatch. If the
Performer is any higher than the stock manifold, you would need to raise
the hatch.

Mike,
Thank you. I have not seen a 403 and believed that they had a similar low profile intake as the 455 -- now I realize they do not, so I can understand why your air cleaner fits up against the hatch.
and I looked at the Edelbrock intake specs for a 403 and see A is 2.50 and B is 3.90. I do not know the A and B specs on a factory 403 intake.

That's correct. Unlike the 455, the 403 did not have a low rise specific intake. They have very minimal clearance to the cover.
