RC and I were interested in this one so i called the seller and picked his brain for over an hour.
Gary was very generous with information and very honest about the saga of his GMC.
Shortly after he bought it the engine croaked. Being a diesel fan, and unencumbered by knowledge or fear, he dove in and hired a mechanic to do a diesel conversion.
Together they solved one problem at a time until it was done.
Then the diesel shredded the transmission. Manny hooked him up with the right trans and now it runs great.
Gary bought the coach to use professionally. He travels all over the west doing video production. He loves the diesel coach, says it runs great and climbs like a goat but he doesn't feel it would be optimal for his business.
I plan to follow the story and see where it ends.

Strange that the most unusual aspect of this GMC is the diesel engine and not one photo of the install. Hmmm

Dave did the interview last night, then forwarded the photos to me. (We're hosting that ad, it's not Craigslist.). We're supposed to get engine pix soon.

Having talked to the guy for a long time, i don't feel there is anything suspicious. He was admittedly naive. He just bought an engine nad hired a mechaninc. He didn't know at the time the hurdles he faced or that the results might be historicly significant so he and his mechaninc did nothign to document the process.
I think these photos are from when he originally purchased the coach. He's a busy guy, took us over a week to line up a time for a call.
But once i got him on the phone he was very generous with time and information.
He has a hot prospect coming up from NM today but if he does not sell the coach I think i can pester him for some engine photos, expesilly if you all show some interest and if he thinks it might help sell the coach.

I want new diesel drivetrain all the way down to where the rubber hits the road. If I have to build an new COE cab to cover it with artistic style & grace, fine.

Manny's conversion uses an inline 4 cylinder engine, and Bill Hubler uses a
6.5 L. GM V8 Diesel. The performance on both is about equal. Both report
around 17 mpg on Diesel. Both have shown to be more reliable than a twin
turbocharged 540 cu in Cadillac. But, not as much fun during burnouts.

I think that while the mileage might be similar, from talking to Manny, Bill and Marc the power is very different. Manny has no power compared to the big diesels which both Bill and Marc say is more than enough.

Looking at the Coop's Koba engine torque charts, I ended up in the 6.x diesel category pretty quickly.
In one of our businesses we've had great luck with Isuzu COE diesel trucks since the mid-80s --all rear drive though, but hauling mostly 24' freight bodies. I keep searching/hoping for a FWD Isuzu 1-ton diesel, but no luck so far.

I'd go with a 4.7x liter turbocharged Isuzu in a heartbeat. Something like the late 90's 4HE1 engine in their NPR model. It would pull a 22 ft enclosed cargo body with freight all day long and get 15 mpg. The only problem I had was speeding. Luckily, the turbo had a distinctive whine when you started to approach 70 mph. Best. Truck. Ever.

Those are my rental weapon of choice when I haul transmitters and the like between markets. Ryder calls them a 'city van'. Two complaints (which wouldn't relate to fitting the engine/trans in a GMC): The ride is choppy - which is true of about any COE box; and the shifter is where the BWD kicks it in neutral when he turns around to sleep looking in a different direction. But, put it on 70, punch the autopilot and hang on.

I'll be getting with the Koba group within the next few weeks as the Royale is schedule to get that implant. I'll see what I can dig up. 355.5 @ 1727 is all I have now.
That said, since the Koba is considered to be one of the engines to emulate, I simply went looking for a similar torque curve in our normal driving range rpms. The 6.xL Fords look close enough to have someone far more experienced than I am to make the call. As for the Isuzu 4.x Turbo, I'd do it in a minute based on my experience with that engine pulling equally, or usually slightly more, problematic loads than the GMC.

Agreed, Drew builds a damn good engine.
However, since it puts out 355.5 at 1700 there is no way it will match the 8.1 that puts out 410 at 1200 as shown in this chart:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/2009_Kodiak_8_1.pdf
I was talking to Dave Lenzi about this chart and he noted the model he has produces even more torque and horsepower.
The bore and stroke of the 455 is 4.126 by 4.25; the 8.1 (496 cu in) is 4.37 by 4.25.

Just for a bit of reference, my 1999 GMC Sierra
2500's 6.0 L (366 CID) engine is rated at 300 HP
at 4800 RPM and 355 lb-ft torque at 4000 RPM. Its
tow rating with the 3.73:1 axle is 8500 pounds.
The GVWR is 7200 pounds. I expect empty weight is
5000 pounds or a bit more (never weighed). It has
gotten 12 mpg with 8000 pound trailer behind on
the flatlands of Illinois and Indiana. Throw in
the Ozarks of Missouri, and the hills of Ohio
and NW PA and SW NY and it would drop to average
of around 8-9 mpg. Empty, it will do the 16 mpg of
its EPA rating if I keep it at 65 or better.
I expect it would do a pretty decent job of moving
the GMC with a decent drive train.

I have tractors for any plowing I need to do, Robert heheh! Most of my haunts are dead flat. I'm not planning on towing any 6000# boats like that Koba from Michigan is doing. I don't see much benefit for me in the 8.1.
