Joe,

AFAIK that is NOT an OEM GMC or Coachman system. You need to post more pictures to help us try and figger out what it is.

My 1977 Coachman Royale has an engine driver AC in the console which takes quite a bit of space above the engine cover. Please see
photos here:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/mechanical/p47663-is-this-ac-unit-a-factory-item.html

I have been unable to find any documentation in the manuals I have nor on the GMC forum.

I am trying to determine if this is a factory installation or is it something that someone has added. The strange thing about this
setup is that it has two controls that are attached to the back of the console. One is a fan speed control, which isn't strange,
but the other control looks like a throttle control from a lawn mower.

If anyone can help me with identifying this unit I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks

Joe, I ain't never seen anything like that before.
Hey, you got Holley tappet covers on that engine? They look just like mine. Had to cut a groove in the pass side one for the ac compressor to fit, on mine.

Joe,

These pictures show what I would call the A/C unit housing, which as noted earlier was not installed by GMC or Coachman. To try and
figger out what kind of unit it is we need a photo of the evaporator coils straight on.

Regards,
Rob M.

I am not sure what is going on with the pictures. I may have done something wrong but when I click on my photos all I get are the
ones I uploaded of the AC unit.

Rob I added two or three more but I don't know what else I can show other than these pictures.

Thanks

Now that is cool but not in the right place in my opinion. Its a mod that is on my Definate top priority list to do eventually. Its kinda like a big old Cadillac limo
has AC in the back and the front on one engine drivin Ac compressor.I would extend that extra evaporator with a squirell cage fan to cool the whole front, without using the rooftop.

Boy, can you even get to the hatch to remove it? Looks home designed. With no cooling, did you check the refrigerant level. It may have leaked down. Replace with Duracool for better cooling and cheaper costs.
The OEM A6 compressor has more than enough capacity to drive the extra cooling. Compressor is not a problem.
Good luck.

Joe,

I can pretty much promise you that this is not something that was assembled by any commercial venture. The way that the plywood pieces were joined (drywall screws and maybe glue) is not even an accepted practice. The interior shelf is clear pine and that would be way too expensive for a production run of more than one. There is also a mis-bend and a correction to the liquid line that would never be allowed even in low volume. (It cost money.) The individual that built this did do a nice job of fitting the joints, but there is no way it could be anybody's production piece. This is all my personal opinion as a someone that has done a lot of all of that sort of thing (for other people that had more money than time).

JoeC,
These coaches, especially the early ones, had very marginal ac so many owners have added a second evaporator and fan running off the engine driven compressor and the original condenser. Yours is one of those. It is a secondary evaporator tied into the engine AC system. Someone might be able to id the unit itself if you remove it from the box. The evaporator and fan most probably came from a mens mall (junk yard).

The rear AC unit of my Royale runs cool for a while, then blow warm air. Is replacing coolant something I can do or be done at Bean Station? Anytime I take my coach to an RV repair place I seem to drop a lot of money.

Joe when I got my coach it also had a aux ac unit installed.
The po had cut the hatch cover about 8" from firewall and hinged it, because the unit sat on that part of the hatch cover. hatch worked fine but I could not reach the power steering pump, water pump, etc. When i removed it and the complete hatch it made a great deal of difference.

My AC unit is a A*R*A brand.. And guys it needs a new home!

I don't know what it is but I think it might be the same as mine. I think I did a better job of covering mine though. This is a photo of my finished project which does not interfere with original engine hatch:

This is a photo I posted a while ago showing what it looked like when I got it. No one at that time could identify it. I think it was installed in Florida, maybe by Alex Sirum?

What did you do with the leftover case/cover and louvers and stuff? I would love to have something like that to install a secondary evaporator behind the cockpit seats to cool the passengers back there.

Armand,
I think what you have is a "Vintage Air" after market unit. Jim Bounds at the Coop has installed these in the past and as I recall they were very similar to your original unit.

Everything except the front louver unit is still under there. I just moved the switch to the front of the unit.
