Woke up to find the Onan running. I did not start it. I used the
stop button to shut it down and it restarted repeatedly by itself.
Disconnected one wire from the starter in order to keep it from starting.
Suggestions appreciated.

First guess is short and or corrosion at the 'Molex' connector under the drawer to the remote inside panel. Next pinched wiring or failed momentary switch on the remote panel or on unit itself. As you have it now, board is still calling for start so might be safer to disconnect negative batt cable.

Thanks Emery, Both, inside and outside panels have the same result.
Which board, or is the board inside the only one?

I was referring to the board on the Onan. Unplug the wire connector from behind the Onan. Then, using a long wire through the rear window to the inside panel, disconnect each wire in turn and test the wire with an ohmmeter. You should be able to determine which wire is bad. If one is shorted to ground connect one side of the meter to ground and test each wire to find which one shows zero or very low ohms.

Emery, before I could get to your suggestion, I had started the Onan and when I shut it down I heard a mechanical click. Do not know what caused it, however, the engine did not try to start by itself. I have now started and stopped the engine numerous times and it seems to have fixed itself, although I do not trust it, have disconnected the starter while it sits.
Any ideas on what the click might have been?

Sounds to me like a stuck relay or solenoid that unstuck itself.
Once had a somewhat similar problem with my 1990 bronco. Starter
solenoid got stuck on, so that even taking the key out, it would keep
cranking (and if you put the key in, it would light off immediately,
overdrive the starter, causing it to disengage. key out, starter spins
down to crank speed, re-engages, resumes cranking)
Terrified of sparks resulting in a battery explosion, i couldn't being
myself to yank the cables (too many horror stories about the effects
of battery acid in my youth) so i let it crank dead.
then, about a minute after it stopped cranking, 'clunk' goes the
solenoid. all worked normally afterward.

Hi Richard
There are two small relays on the Onan control board. These are in little white plastic "boxes". The contacts might have stuck on one of the relays and then later released.
If you are very careful you can pull the plastic boxes off and very carefully ckecked the contacts. You could use some 600 grit or finer sandpaper to burnish the contact surfaces. Be careful you don't bend anything as they are very small

"Cannot be replaced"?? Or "Exact part no longer available"? My old Kohler 'thumper' has replacement relays I put on the control card. Electrically identical, physically they're bigger than the original which isn't made any more. They work, though

Still there may be enough corrosion on the wire run to the in house panel to be calling relay for a false start signal. This is a famous fail point from road spray getting into non waterproof connector. Corrision travels up the copper quite a way too. ( copper oxide crumbles)
