I only understand simple answers so please keep it simple...because that's
how I roll <g>

If I take the 'sim card' out of one cell phone and put it in another, have
I transferred every bit of info from phone 1 into phone 2?
Will phone 2 work but think it is really phone 1 ?

Is it much more complicated than this?

Thanks

Mike in NM

Well, there are two things.

The sim card has the phone number associated with it, and you might have a
limited address book on the card (255 entries, I seem to recall).

Smart phones like and Android (and I assume iPhone) also have some sort of
account associated that may have some or all of your data. My experience is
with T-Mobile, with dumb phones, Sidekicks, and Android. Sidekicks kept all
of your data. Android keeps more and more of it with each new version, and
that may vary with the carrier.

So for a new android device, all the info is in your google account. But
that is probably not your case.

Mike, your question is a good one. I can speak for ATT. I can take my ATT sim card out and put it in any phone compatible with their system. I buy and repair Iphone 3 and 3gs phones. I always test them with my sim card. I should say I by the 3gs phones but can repair either. The phone numberlists dont go with the ATT cards but we can save them onto Itunes and retrieve them, placing them on a "new" phone. I don't know about Android phones. ATT does not charge for the smart phones if you just buy one and swap your sim from old phone into the smart phone.
Email me if you have more questions.

Guys,

Do both the new phone and the old phone need to be 'unlocked'
for this to work?

Maybe neither?

G'day,

I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S II from Red Bull Mobile (yes the drink company) that was locked to the Vodaphone network here in
Australia.

Since I have a T-Mobile SIM card I use in the USA to avoid exorbitant roaming rates it needed to be unlocked for the T-Mobile SIM to
work.

I went to the Vodaphone website and entered the S II's IMEI code and was provided with the unlock code which I entered and unlocked
the phone.

To make sure it WAS unlocked I borrowed the SIM card from a Mate of mine that's on the Telstra network and put it in the phone. When
I powered the phone back up I was able to make calls using his SIM. I put the Red Bull Mobile SIM back in and it worked.

Nope, as long as they are set up for same carrier such as ATT. Not all cells use sim cards. I don't like unlocked Iphones. I bought 2 and had to part them out.

I should have said jailbroken phones. Factory unlocked is good. Some of the jailbroken phones use a teathered bootup, until someone comes up with untethered boot. And, they do. I found myself with a couple of these and it put a bad taste in my mouth. Also when you upgrade a jailbroken phone it can cause problems. I like Apple's stuff better than what the jailbreakers offer, Cydia. I just decided I was not working on any more jailbroken phones.
Just the way I see it. Others will disagree and that is ok by me.

Hi Dan

I used a jailbreak setup with my 3G iphone because I wanted to be able to Tether my computer to my iphone to download internet things such as Quicken data when I am traveling.
I have never used one with a tethered boot. I was waiting to download OS 6 for my 4S iphone because I didn't want to lose the tethered ability. Last week I used iTunes to restore my iphone. No problem. Then I updated OS 6.1 onto the iphone. Then I installed evasi0n1.1 onto my computer and used it to jailbreak my iphone again.
.
evasi0n 1.1 is an untethered jailbreak for all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 6.0 through 6.1

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

- MacOSX 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8
- Windows (XP minimum)
- Linux x86/x86_64 (Kernel >= 2.6.24, libgtk+-2.0 >= 2.24.13)

SUPPORTED FIRMWARES:
- iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, and 6.1

I then went onto the net with my iPhone using Cydia and installed the latest version of MyWi which allows my iphone to be a wifi hotspot. I or anyone near me (that i give the password to) can then connect to the Internet with their computer.

It works great for me and I have not had any of the issues that you speak of with regard to being able to restore my iPhone back to its purchased from Apple format and to then upgrade to the latest iphone operating system.

You said that others would disagree with you. I just wanted to let other users see that a lot of people have success with doing it.

Yea, I hear ya Emery. I just dont like messing with them. If I had more training I might be fine with it. Spent too much time and cash on two phones trying to get them to work after someone tried to ugrade before restoring them. Works great for many people. I don't need a hotspot as we dont have internet on our phones. Just wifi. Last week I changed my unlimited Verizon to 5 gig and got a new MIFI with external antenna jack. My router and air card were not as portable as I wanted. We now can stick the wifi in my pocket and go. We are rarely running over 2 gig a month so I thought it was time to save 10 bux a month. They wanted to charge me for the unit but I whined so much they gave it to me for free. They advertize this battery as 10 hours. I have used it over 8 hours and still had 20% charge. I like that.

Verizon Jetpack. I chose it so I can hook my external antennas to it. Works very well. I have a 3/4g antenna coming today for the car, little mag mount. My amplifiers wont work when in 4g service, but I have not needed an amplifier in a while, mostly out west.
Just about to stick it in my shirt pocket and take Teri up the road 60 miles for a medical procedure. Battery life is great. I am using a mini usb charging cord from one of my cameras to charge when in car.

Emery,

Does the restore retain all your apps and info? An IT guy at Penske
Racing did the jailbreak on mine and I regret letting him and would like
to set it back. I understand there is another workaround but it involves
downloading some big file for the restore - looked confusing.

TIA

Yes, but first do a sync to move anything updated by phone to the computer.

When the sync finishes do the restore.
Them you can update the operating system if you don't already have the latest.

All of your Apple apps should be there. But if you installed any jailbreak apps from Cydia they will be missing unless you do another jailbreak and go to Cydia to reinstall them.

Emery,

The only option I see is restore from backup. I don't think I have a
pre-jailbreak backup - that was the method I was thinking of. I'd
downloaded a generic backup from the web and that's what I don't trust.

Is there a simple restore to factory in iTunes or is it done on the
phone itself?

Thanks again!

You don't need a pre-jjailbreak backup. Just connect your phone to your computer bring up iTunes and do a phone sync. That will backup all of the current apps, music, photos, etc. from your phone to the computer.

Then do a restore. That will bring your phone to a state where it will be all Apple and your jailbreak version of the operating system will be gone. Then do an update to the latest OS for the phone (if you don't have the latest version.) Then do another sync and it will put all Apple apps, pictures, music, etc back onto your restored phone from the computer.

Do not try to update before you have restored.
