Did our income taxes over the weekend. We owe around $8500.

See, I bought a house in 2010 and thought I was gonna settle down with
Girl Z. But then she flaked the heck out and R-U-N-N-O-F-T. Then I met
Dana and we got married in November 2011 and we had a choice; not move
in together until the 3 year time period was up (February 2013) or
move in together and one of us was going to have to repay our First
Time Homebuyer's Tax Credit, since one of us would no longer be using
that house as our primary residence.

I looked every which way there is for a loophole, workaround, or other
way to weasel out of it (I am an attorney, after all), but there just
simply isn't. That 3 year requirement is there to make sure that folks
don't buy a "home", get a free eight grand, and then immediately turn
it into a rental property. From a policy standpoint it makes sense.

I don't really mind taxes... I mean, I'm a Federal employee, it's
where my paycheck comes from. It pays for Veterans benefits, and the
military, and the interstates, and some financial regulators that I
really really would like to have a sit down with some time, but that's
another subject. I make a good living and if I gotta kick in a bit
more now than I did when I was poor, then that's okay. It's just the
price I gotta pay.

The wheels and black tank and other parts for the Royale are going to
be around 2 grand, and I can't justify that at the moment. I gotta be
a grown-up (something I *hate* to admit) and handle this.

I will see if we can make it in our daily driver.

If it pinches that much, the IRS is actually pretty lenient on re-payment arrangements (Don't ask me how I know). That said, they usually get 18% on their money (but that might be less than you're paying on your credit cards).

Yeah, the IRS has a "pay whatever you want for however long you want,
we know we're getting our money in the end" thing they call an
"installment agreement." In talking to the IRS drones, theyve always
been super nice and helpful. One of my coworkers here is an IRS
transplant. As long as you're not committing a crime and/or trying to
actively cheat the system, the IRS is easy to work with.

We just paid off the last of our credit cards. Our only debts are now
our two houses (one of which is rented out for the cost of the
mortgage, so it more or less zeroes out), her Honda, and about $120k
in student loans... half of which I hope to get forgiven if I can
avoid walking out of here in frustration. We do the Dave Ramsey
"Financial Peace" thing. I don't care for his religion or politics,
but he's dead on when it comes to what it takes to get out of debt and
handle your financial responsibilities.

It is telling that what once would have been a disaster from which
there is no recovery is now just a temporary setback. There was a time
when I've been crash-on-other-peoples-couches homeless, and had
utilities shut off, and walked because my POS car was broke down and I
couldn't afford the repairs. Now its like "Oh bother. I can't take one
of my two RVs to a big party because of some tax implications of my
second home." :) I'm no Thurston Howell the Third, but I can handle
it.

And really, I *could* afford getting the wheels and doing the repairs
in time for Dothan. It just wouldn't be the responsible thing to do,
though.

Here's an option for you, Robin:

Rent a pop-up camper (with A/C) for a week to
take to Dothan! Heck, it might even work to
BUY a used one cheaply!

I may resort to hauling our 30' travel trailer
if I can't get Money Pit ready to go!

If I get another vehicle of ANY sort my wife is going to murder me for
the insurance money. :) Besides, for what I would spend on even a used
camper plus the inevitable tires and minor repairs, that would have
gotten the Royale up and going, without the need for cluttering up the
house further with yet ANOTHER vehicle (the boat and my '68 Pontiac
are at the house, and the two RVs are at the storage lot).

Robin I am sure everyone would love to see your smiling face there with or without your coach. Why not jump in the car take your new bride and tell her this trip is all about her. (seriously it is all about her..lol ) Rent a room for a couple nights and enjoy.
Good luck.. Hope things work out the way you want. J

Wife just informed me that week coincides with Spring Break. That is
not a problem for us, we don't have kids, and play the role of the
Cool Aunt and Uncle. One of her sisters has two autistic boys, and
school is going to be out. I believe she's going to head up to
Nashville and help her sister out during that week, so if I go to
Dothan at all, it's going to be solo. Maybe I'll drive my Catalina and
sleep in a tent. :) I would only be able to do the weekend, though,
rather than the whole time. Looks like tent camping costs six bucks a
night, sweet!

Robin, I wrote a big check to the IRS just last week. I guess we should be glad that we can help support the government. Your thinking is correct, in my opinion. My son is a CPA and works for Dave Ramsey in Brentwood. Mr. Ramsey even pays our son while he is at St. Jude's with our granddaughter, so he can keep the family together during these trying times.
Now, how far do you think it is to Dothan? I am guessing 200 miles, or so. We made that trip the last time Dothan housed the convention. We were on our way home from Arizona and had been at my brother's in Monroe for a week or so. If you think the GMC is not roadworthy then make sure you come in a vehicle and spend a couple of nights. They have lots of motels and, as you noted, one might sleep in a tent. There are showers available.
My plan is to drive our GMC to Tuscaloosa a week or two before Dothan, leave it at my cousin's. We will be able to shave a couple of days from missing work with this plan. Missing work is no big deal to me but I have convinced Teri that I can keep her from missing much work so she is now coming with me. Hope to make Dothan by Friday at noon.
Anyway, there will be no closer convention to you unless we get back to La. soon. Make your plans to do what has to be done to get there and don't go into debt to do it. You need to meet and visit with the folks that have helped you along with your coaches. Imagine 1-200 owners who are as nice and friendly as Tom Phipps. What I am rambling about is this: you can't afford not to show up. Seeing the stuff that the vendors have, in person, is also priceless. Ask Jeremy. He and his bride were there for a weekend last time, before 3 kids. Being able to visit in person and see the other coaches will charge your batteries for a long time to come.

Dan is right. My wife and I just made it for Do than the last time. This time I'm going solo. Too many kids and not enough ways to keep them busy. I'll probably role in Saturday a.m. and leave Monday night or Tuesday depending on the schedule. You really can't beat the experience of meeting the vendors face to face and seeing all the coaches. Some great ideas of what you can really do with a GMC. The seminars are incredible also and it is nice to put faces to names here on the list as well as the folks on the blacklist. Try and make it for a few days, well worth the time and you can prorate the conventionfee.

Thanks,

$8500 - $11K, it's only money.  2500 put new wheels and tyres on my 23'... JimK wheels and Cooper tyres.  I'd lend you my takeoffs for the trip, but getting them to you and then back would cost more'n buying the new ones.
Cheer up, my loot is going to the vet school over in Athens for an ailibng Border Collie.

Oh, that's a kind thought. :) But you're right.

Thing is, if I was willing to be an irresponsible kid, I could totally
do it. But I'm not willing ot be an irresponsible kid. That is a good
way to stay poor, and I've had quite enough of that as a kid and a
young adult. Maybe come Fall, or even next year, I'll have things
sorted out to the point that I can justify it. Or maybe the
promotion/transfer I've been fighting for will finally come through
someday.

If your wife heads to Opry City then maybe Roger Black could plan to leave
the area and head to Dothan. His wife ain't no lover of GMCing and he could
stand a roomy in his 23 (if it's still not in the mud).

I'd offer some space but our couch or dinette are only for folks 5' 8" or
less; preferably less. Yep, poor thinking on someone's part unless this is
the way to limit house guests to grandchildren.
