What tools and parts do you carry when going on a long trip? There's the obvious stuff like tire changing tools and a supply of all fluids (some more than others). An AAA card is certainly a must. Some parts and tools you carry to do a field repair. Others you carry because of availability issues. I assume you'll need any required tools for field repairs. Not looking to carry a whole garage of parts.

Mandatory List
User, Maintenance, and Parts Manuals
Spare tire, proper jack, spare lug nuts
All fluids, Engine, tranny, power steering, brake, windshield washer
AAA Card
Most up date Black list
Fuses (AC and DC)
Duct Tape and bailing wire
Jump box (I keep that in my Toad anyway)
Full Set of belts (Fan, steering, and AC)
Common tools (Good set of Wrenches, Sockets, drivers, BFH, ect)


Optional
Airbag (looking to make this mandatory)
Spare cap, rotor, points, wires (I normally keep my previous tuneup parts if serviceable)
Gas cap
Wiring Repair kit (various wires, lugs and connections)
Mutimeter

What would you add, move, or remove?

Belts, Shocked ... meant to have that on the list. Should go without saying.

What is the function of the plastic gear? Is it a critical component? I've seen it advertised on several websites. I assume it's part of a "weak link" of sorts. Designed to give out in oreder to save some other component. Governor? speedo. If it's just a speedo I can use my GPS for that.

You will not be able to shift into 2nd or 3rd gear without it.

The "small plastic gear" drives the transmission governor, which in turn drives the speedometer. As you noted, the speedo isn't that big of a deal, but the governor is. Usually, stays in 1st gear without it turning.

Gene's list will give you things to think about, like the current Black List (aka GMC assist).

But there are things I always carry that you didn't include.
One would be soft iron wire (baling, re-bar or mechanic's wire) to tie up something. I also carry two coupling and 5feet of 1/4 air line just in case the suspension should take a hit.

I am guessing you are assuming a full wrench and socket set along with other common tools. I will add - one each dirt cheap (like Free to 3$max) VOM from HF.

And, the jump box is a waste. As long as you don't kill both the main engine (chassis) battery and the house battery at the same time, you can use the good battery to start either the APU or the main engine -- Problem Solved !!! And then use the boost switch to start the other.

All good suggestions. Added to list. The jump box is something I normally carry in my VW Thing. In addition to it's intended use I find it useful as a portable power source. Cell phones, GPSs, computer.

Also if your vacuum hose slips off the bottom of the transmission it acts like this gear is broken as well, they both have the same

scientific event. Not switching gears out of first. I bought one because i was not told the hose was off. This made me not trust

the person i was working with that i was not told it slipped off. I thought it was manny's fault. If you shift down at high rpm

it can blow the hose off the vacuum pipe that attaches to the transmission under the back of it. If you get this event of sticking

in low gear, stop and look under the passenger side of the transmission and see if the vacuum hose has blown off.

All you have to do is slip it back on and not wait for a week for the little white gear to come in from JimK like i did for nothing as well

as thinking for a month or so that it was manny's fault. Which is a sin to think of, for manny is the best thing in the world for all of us.

He and jimK, JimB, and Burton, Mac, Rob, And forgive me the many persons here that i am still a newbie about that are of great integrity.

Something everyone with headers should know: You cannot remove the
governor to replace that drive gear until you've removed the left header.

That means that in addition to the gear and pin, you need a header gasket.

There is another alternative, I'm told. Before I installed the Cad500,
when running a 455, I installed a governor with its top dome made
removable. I'm told, though I don't recall ever trying it, that if one
removes the dome first, the rest of the governor can then be R&R'd without
disturbing the header.

Removing the governor dome is simple: Carefully grind off the outside of
the crimped flange, being careful to only cut through the thin sheet
metal. There will still be a narrow flange on the dome to mate with the
flat bottom plate. After installing the governor, put a little RTV around
the flange before attaching the dome. The retaining spring bail that holds
the governor down will also hold the dome in place.

Forgot to add to my version of the list.
The GMC parts book, produced annually by GMC Motorhomes International. Saves time and effort, especially dealing with the younger generation who cannot find anything, if it is not listed in their computer. The new issue goes in the motorhome, and last year's in my truck.
