Have a terrible bad smell in my 55 x 36 shop that I have the GMC in. Everthing else too, tools,welder,lathe mill, Avalanche, etc. Smells like SKUNK. Oh no. Its bad.Left the door open 10 inches(double slider) overnite and place a bunch of flour in the opening. No good(to see the tracks). Put in a "live trap" with cat fud. No joy.(covered all but one side with a trash bag)I think my Probe has stopped oiling the rockers. Got a wagon with an o2 sensor not working. A saturn with bad motormounts and a jeep thats dieing at stop signs. Not counting the dash I need to create. This is really bad. I think it might be dead. That could be good. No squirt. Bringing home a hazmat suit and a faceshield. Wonder if I still have air in the scuba tanks!!!!! Any ideas,,,,the wife won't help me find it and she said I can't use HER Lab. What good is it having a dog. Any ideas?????,,,,,PL

A single dead mouse can create an awful stench that will permeate an entire space. The good news is that it usually only lasts a couple weeks.
As far as finding it goes...open a door at each end and with some fans get the air moving. Once it has aired out a bit, come in the exhaust side of the air movement and follow your nose toward the strongest smell.

Skunks are pretty easy to trap with a live cage trap and peanut butter in a
cup. After that, if you move them during the day, they are very
lethargic and won't spray.
My guess is that the skunk is no longer there but has either sprayed inside
or more likely the outside of the barn. Friends had a skunk spray the
outside of their house block foundation repeatedly in a fight with a
raccoon. They had to move out for a few weeks. They had a service bring
in ozone generators that ran round the clock. They also removed the
finished drywall and insulation from that wall. Even then, it was
noticeable inside the house for 6 months.

Skunk and dead thing should be very different smells. Change the oil in the Probe and leave the pan at the door opening. That will leave tracks and fix the Probe 2for1.

Not sure if it would matter in the winter.. but black snakes also have sort of a skunk smell when the are frightened. Had a snake die in our hunting cabin in october and would take your breath away.. not like being in love either..lol

Paul, let me tell about the great Macleay Skunk Hunt. Picture an angry
biker old lady that had her downstairs bedroom sprayed by a skunk lured
inside via a pet door and a dish of cat food. Enter Biker husband and 6
biker buddies all clad in leather and armed with handguns in various
caliber. Combine that with beer, lots of beer. Skunks were residing under a
ground level wood deck. Plan was, get screw guns, lift up the deck boards,
locate and dispatch skunks with guns, Repeat as necessary. 13 resident
skunks under deck, most unhappy with being disturbed. End result, well,
nobody died from gunshot wounds; good. 13 dead skunks. 7 very smelly (more
than usual) hung over bikers. 7 sets of leathers that still reek of skunk
when they get wet. My neighbor's house and ours smelled like skunks all
summer. TRUE STORY.

We have skunks here too. One moved in under the dog house while it was unoccupied. A skunk will not spray where it lives unless its life depends on it, and then it will move out. They don't like the stink either. If it sprayed the outside of a steel barn, the stink will probably come inside as well. If one sprayed the outside wall, you can usually see the stain. If you find it, go to the end of the long paragraph below.
But....
Cats love the taste of ethylene glycol. It is just as deadly to them as it is to most other animals.
You have been working on cars in this barn?
Did you even leave a drain pan used for coolant on the floor?
Are there any cats in the county?
It works out that if there are two yes in the three above (sucker bet), there is almost certainly a dead cat hidden under something (where it went to die). Get out your gas mask (honestly, a carbon filter mask will do it), a good flashlight and a shovel. Lie face-down on a creeper and look under everything. When you see what looks like a moldy rag, try to scrape it up in one lump and get it outside. It may come apart on the shovel. If you need to clean up more, you will need some of the 30% H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) that is sold for hottubs. This stuff will oxidize anything, so you need as much protection for your skin as you can arrange. (This is no 5h1t. It burns skin on contact.) You can put it in a plastic garden sprayer, but that will very possibly be destroyed if it is not cleaned out immediately after you use it.
Do I need to say the BTDTs?

I did not know there were easy consumer sources of H2O2 stronger than the
3% stuff at your beauty supply store. Now if you want a tanker of the
stuff, you can get it up to 70%, but any stronger than that gets a little
scary, so you will need to build your own still.
Oh, and if you want a clear liquid that will go boom nicely, try pure H2O2
with 1-10% methanol. Perhaps put a ball bearing in the container. Shake. I
hope you left a will.

Well Ron,
The German ME-163 was powered by a rocket fueled by mixing high density H2O2 and a Methanol/Hydrazine mix. They were so scared of the two, that they never let the fueling trucks near the aircraft at the same time and all the crew (pilot, ground and all) had to wear full rubber suits all the time.....
I happen to like using H2O2 because it does not create weird halogenated compounds that can be very toxic.

Instead, it turns them into explosive organic peroxides!
For more fun "Ignition!: An informal history of liquid rocket propellants"
can be downloaded from various places on the internet (it's out of print),
it is a very good read. Chlorine trifluoride is another exciting compound.

+1 ^^^^^^ dead mice and rats really stink.
They could be behind the walls or in any space really, the sickly stench is so bad it will make your eyes water.
As Kerry said once they have finished rotting the smell goes away
