I am still comtemplating adding a tack to my dash. And like most things, I do have the ability to over think things.
One the chevelle ss, its fuel, temp gauge also had a tach in the center of it. Makes me wonder if i could add this insert to my fuel guage. But before i take my dash apart and probably break something I have to ask has anyone taken there guage apart before? If so, is it designed for the center section to be removed, or otherwise could it be easily cut out so that the tach insert for the SS could be added? Maybe look original, and not have to cut a hole in a perfectly good dash.

Brian,
You may be able to just use the gauges in the Chevelle part. GM has used the same Zero low - 90 high for about six decades that I know of. The GMC dash is one of the ancient designs that is an panel with a cover. I suggest that you investigate before you make your mind up to cut up anything that will just fine the way it is. I have seen this transplant done to get advantage.
Best of luck

" I have to ask has anyone taken there guage apart before? If so, is it designed for the center section to be removed, or otherwise could it be easily cut out so that the tach insert "
short answer, no. the whole back of the guage cluster is a printed circuit board, not separate guages around the circle. And the depth is less than most tachs.
I'm just finishing up the tachvac installation as MrERF posted
http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/tech/tachvac/index.html
I might point out a couple of things about this install. Mine is one of the 2" Westach dual guages as shown. But the space is very tight, don't know why but mine just barely clears the speedo, guage cluster and top of the panel. The depth of the tach is greater than the cluster and it doesn't clear one of the plastic T-bars in back that support the dash panel.
Also the plastic fake woodgrain dash face comes off first, then there is a steel panel mounting with access for all the guages, switches etc. The tach in the pictures is mounted on top of the plastic face so that it will no longer come off without pulling off the top of the dash and removing the tach from the back.
Also my tach is not lighted so it is usless at night. Once I become more familar with the coach I don't expect to watch it much. But for now watchiing the vac may help me learn to drive it better. Plus I have an unknown FD ratio and maintaning highway traffic flow puts the tach near the top of it's range, I like to move along. Putting it in line of sight is better than having it down under the dash by my knees.
