I'd like to replace the engine to water heater hoses on my 78 EL II. I have removed under sink shelf unit. The hoses go towards the front and down thru the floor. I can't see the hoses going thru the floor. From the outside the hoses run up thru the floor to the heater. The hoses feel loose going thru the floor penetrations. So what's the recommended method of replacing these hoses? Figure out a way to cut old hoses and snake in new ones or go to the effort of removing the refrigerator? Try the snake method and if it doesn't work then remove the frig?

Thanks,

George,

On my previous 73 -- there was a splice fitting where the hoses went through the floor -- but I understand this is not in place in later coaches.
I would try tying the new hose to the old and pulling it through -- like feeding a wire cable. I seem to remember someone mentioned this worked for them.

George,

I remembered where I had read the comments about installing the hoses...

Just a note, removing the frig will not help as the "floor" under it is solid.

On my '73, I could reach the hoses, running on top of the wheel well, though the cabinet under the frig.

Well both hoses are out. used small metal snake to pull string thru the old hoses and pulled both out. New hose is ready and I'll install next week.

Write up pretty much sums up what it took. As far as the frig goes I can see the space behind the frig where the hoses run, Looking thru the frig where the power supply is located. No real reason to pull frig. The hoses came with a little bit of tugging.

Thanks for the information Mike & Gene!

George, when you put in the new hose, consider putting cut-off valves near the block. When you do not need the water preheated, turn off the feed to the hot water hose. The pain of a broken hose equals a broken engine. Do not ask how I know.

This is the first time I've thought about it, but it may be worth
considering: For heater hoses, there are available "H-valves" which, when
shut off, divert the input back to the output hose. That is, they install
in both the in- and out-hoses. Cable operated, one of those might be a
convenient mod -- pull the cable to open the valve when hot water's wanted,
push it in when safety's more important.

Just an idea. Acme used to sell those valves. Since the foreign outfit
bought them a couple of years ago, they apparently no longer sell to the
public and I don't know another source.

I need one of those to put on my JD tractor. It runs all winter on full cabin heat while plowing snow. Note: Finn is saying he should have stayed in Alabama. He still has not seen enough snow here for him to play in of for me to plow.

In the summer I would love to turn it off rather than having to remove it and reroute the coolant path. Continuous coolant flow on that path is needed by the engine but I need to bypass the heater in the summer.
