Now that I'm free of encumbrances here in GA, I'm planning to make my
long-delayed trip to the NW this summer. Present plan is to go to Bean
Station the first weekend in May and head west after that. Some time
before GMCMI Branson in September, enroute home, we'll tour the
Olympic Peninsula and BC. Routes and stops between those points are
completely up in the air right now.
For the most part, I'll let GPS choose the roads, my not knowing any
better, with toll and interstate highways locked out. There are some areas
where "you just can't get there from here" without following the
interstates, but for the rest of the country, I want to see the sights, not
the tractor-trailers.

stops shown are at places we have relatives or know GMCers.
Advice on must-see sights, nice/cheap/friendly campgrounds, invitations to
visit, etc., appreciated. Since we've been to Cascades, Glacier, Rushmore,
Bad Lands, Jasper, Banff, and Kootenay NP's, we're most interested in the
Kamloops area as our "destination" -- IF it's worth it. Should we include
Vancouver Island? How much is the ferry ride?
The whole thing's tentative at this point. Especially the "out to the
south and back to the north"; I haven't yet given much consideration to the
weather.

Ken, if you come through Interstate 5 and Salem, Judy and I will love to
have you as guests as long as you would like to stay. I have Pad and
hookup. Just give us a heads up.

Ken,
I see you have Lousyville on the trail from Bean Station westward. Your
route will take you through the Cumberland Gap. From there, you have the
option of going through the Gap or the tunnel. Of course, since you like the
back roads you'll want to come through Bardstown and a stop at one of the
distilleries. Great tours whether or not SHE drinks the stuff. Of course,
I'd plan on a night there and the Stephen Foster Story, which SHE will enjoy
and THEE might, too. Heck, we'll even make a point to get there to meet you
and have dinner at the historic tavern and a Hot Brown for the main course.
If you want to spend money, take a ride on the dinner train by yourself.
Social Security doesn't pay enough for us to do that.
If you prefer to layover in Louisville, we have a 50-amp hookup. Before
you'd get out of town I'd take you to the Louisville Slugger Museum and
Factory or even the Kentucky Derby Museum. Real easy to do both, of course.
Since you'd be here after Derby Day getting some time at the track is always
fun. Just be sure to have some "recreational funds" with you.

Thanks for the hints. We may wind up spending a day or two in Louisville.
We'll have just spent a few days with JR & Jeanne Slaten, and, hopefully,
you and Martha, but we need to visit Peggy Moore.
I wasn't aware that KY had a Steven Foster story. We'll be too early for
it though, since the 2013 season doesn't begin until 8 June -- you sure
don't want us around that long! :-)
What we do need to do while we're there is got to the Buffalo Ranch for
dinner. I REALLY enjoyed that while I was there to get JR & Bobby's help
installing my 6 wheel disc brakes, back in about 2002. Or is the
restaurant still open?

Ken,
I was going to mention Peggy in my other email. But, by the time I got
through what I did my mental disease temporarily kicked in. Two minutes
after hitting Send the temporary situation lifted and the thought came back
to my mind. She'd surely enjoy that greatly. Of course, she has room in her
driveway, too. Heck, you could probably back into the garage and be
incognito Š an in the dark.
No, we don't want you 'til June. Too darn long, even for family. Besides,
we're leaving for Cody, WY before Memorial Day weekend. Got things places to
go and things to see.
As to Buffalo Ranch -- were you wanting to ride or eat the critters. If you
want to eat bison another restaurant would be better since that one's no
longer in operation. If you're wanting to ride, the choices are greater.
Shucks, you can even get some chips for a collection if you'd like. Normally
they're $10 a bag for residences but visitors from Georgia get two bags for
free. Such a deal!
We could even go snipe huntin' if you want. Just be sure to throw in your
own sack and have fresh batteries for the light. Sometimes they're hard to
get unless the moon is just right and the wind relatively calm. Ideal
conditions exist about the second week in May.

Yep, I've spent a good bit of time parked in the Moore driveway. Bobby,
whom I don't think you ever met, was a most persuasive, perhaps I should
say "demanding" individual when he wanted you to do things HIS way
(always). :-) GOSH I miss him! Cant go to L'ville without seeing Dear
Peggy.
I' figgered you didn't need any rotten fish around. :-)
Sorry to hear the Buffalo Ranch restaurant has closed; it was really good.
Is there a good alternative? Don't think I"ll need to ride nor follow a
buffler around though.
Nor hunt snipes -- I'll leave that to you bloodthirsty types. I killed
enough critters, real and imagined, during my teen years to last a lifetime.

When you get to Seattle, take the Bainbridge Island boat and not the Bremerton boat. That's unless you have a reason to stop in Bremerton or Silverdale. Bainbridge Island is a better drive and easier to maneuver through. Same departure location in Seattle, just say "Bainbridge" when you get to the pay window. Avoid downtown Seattle during the commute times. Access to the ferry terminal is through surface streets. They are getting read to dig a tunnel, things are torn up and some roads may be detoured.
Bainbridge Island is joined to the peninsula by a small bridge (not too small). 5 miles after leaving the island you will Pass through Poulsbo and within a mile of our house.

I haven't spent enough time in the Seattle area to really understand your
suggestions: Why do I want to go to Bainbridge Island OR Bremerton? Do
those also go to Vancouver Island? If so, where do they dock? If not, is
there any reason to take the GMC there vs driving the toad? We'll likely
camp for at least part of our time in the area at McChord AFB in Tacoma and
tour with the toad, including visiting a niece in Seattle.
All that will probably become clear when I get there, or spend some map
study time.

I was just looking at the map and it has you going through Bremerton via the Seattle/Bremerton ferry. Unless you have a specific reason to visit or explore Seattle, continue south on I5 to Tacoma and further south to your McCord/Lewis destination. When you are done go back north to Tacoma and take WA16 to the Olympic Peninsula and on to you 101 loop. You'll want the motorhome on the 101 loop. It can be done in one day but you miss too much that way. Lots of good campsites on the coast.
Although I'm sure it's done all the time. I can't imagine maneuvering Downtown Seattle surface streets in a motorhome with a toad.
You can get to Vancouver Island via a ferry in Port Angeles (Olympic Peninsula). Victoria, BC is like a little Britain. The ferry can be a bit expensive though.

Oh, now I understand. The routing in that area is far from finalized; I
just stuck destinations in pretty much at random. The software's
limitations are pretty severe, especially when it's got that many route
legs to calculate each time I make a change.
No, I have no intention of going "downtown", even with the 23' & toad.
Me'n'traffic don't get along well any more.

 Opps, I just noticed I was looking at your route in the wrong direction.
Now that my head is back on track (and in the right direction)  , I would make the following recommendations.
After you completed your US 101 loop around the Olympic Peninsula take the Kingston/Edmonds ferry rather than the Bainbridge Island/Seattle or Bremerton/Seattle. The Kingston/Edmonds ferry is a whole lot more RV friendly as far as getting back on I5. You also get to avoid Seattle traffic entirely.

Another option would be to go ahead and go to Port Townsend (last part of the 101 loop) and take the Port the Townsend/Coupeville ferry. That way you cruise up through Whidbey Island. Much nicer scenery than the I5 corridor. Plan on making a stop at Deception Pass. Great State park for RVs there. You can pick up I5 at Burlington. (Change your "N" waypoint to Port Townsend, WA)

Ken, Bob and I really enjoyed the Tacoma Glass Museum when we were in WA in
2011. Also enjoyed running along the Hood Canal in our toad. There were a
few RV parks along that road, too.

Sandra,
You know, I hadn't even thought about the Hood Canal. Are you saying we
should take the toad rather than the GMC on US-101? Or are you suggesting
a ride up the E. side? Hopefully, we'll have plenty of time to see
whatever we want to -- not rushed like when we were in the area in 2000
enroute to Alaska.

You'll want the motorhome on the 101 loop. There's several seaside RV parks (National, State as well as private). Check out Kalaloch.
