G'day,

At the GMCMI Convention I got myself elected as the VP Technical for Eastern States GMC. After doing so I was concerned about
participating in group meetings / phone calls and was told "no problem we use Skype."

A mate of mine up on the Gold Coast had been prodding me to download the application but I never bothered because I have a callback
card that allows me to call the USA for less than $0.01 per minute. I dial a local number and I then can call anywhere in the world
at seriously reduced rates.

At any rate I bought myself a headset, camera, and downloaded and installed Skype. MattC and I made sure I could be contacted; he
called me and then I called him. The GMCES meeting went well.

Since then I have called an old HOG Hong Kong friend in Las Vegas and yesterday KenB and I had a long chat. The thing I REALLY like
is you can make video calls!

My Skype number is robert.mueller1946 if anyone wants to share their Skype number you can send it to robmueller at iinet dot net dot
au.

One thing, right now Sydney is on Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time and is 5:30 PM on Thursday, February 07, 2013. In New
York City (Eastern Standard Time) it's 00:30 Thursday, February 07, 2013. Therefore I am 17 hours ahead.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, I've been using Skype out for the majority of my out-going calls from home. For $30 per year, you can make unlimited outgoing calls to the US and Canada with no time limits. Video is supported. I can also do Skype to Skype.
Skype also has a more expensive in coming service, you get a phone number that everyone can call you. I elected not to have this service. It is $90 a year.
Marilyn was in Singapore, and we Skyped every day. Her GovT supplied Blackberry never did work overseas.
I was very lucky a few years ago and bought a cell phone sized Skype phone, no computer needed, just a WiFi connection. Even will work at McD's. The small factor is no longer available. Bummer.
My Skype phone will also link up to my 3G Hotspot and works well. 4G supports video.
The convergence of telecommunications is moving rapidly. Old fashioned land line business model is in trouble - until a major storm hits and the towers go quiet.
Learned that while providing hurricane support along the Gulf Coast.
However, my amateur radio gear works just fine. Chasing hurricanes and hoping not to catch one.

Some us guys remember (and resemble) that comment: "He's got a face for radio"

Let's just say, I have more "presence" on-the-phone than on-camera.

All kidding aside, it is a wonderful technology but....CAN be a distraction.

Rob,
Why won't Skype send the call the shorter way so it is a 7 hour difference?
