I use my Samsung Galaxy 4G cellular phone on AT&T wireless with a hotspot
for my laptop. If I have a cell signal, I have Internet Access. I also have
it on my phone, but it is a slow loader when 4G is not available.

Well, for cell modem type things, I'd get the Virgin Mobile "OVERDRIVE PRO™
3G/4G MOBILE HOTSPOT", $55 a month, 5GB 3G, unlimited 4G (Clear/Sprint
WiMax, but mostly only works in or near urban areas), so you have 5GB
outside of cities, and really nice service in or near enough to them. I
have a Clear 4G device, and it's great, but I've not tried out side of the
city, and their coverage maps show that I shouldn't bother. If you think
you will be able to make use of the 4G WiMax, it is the way to go,
otherwise, there may be better choices (more money, but better if you
cannot use the unlimited 4G from Clear).
Not looked at satellite.

Well, I have a cheeeep TV, a BIG box of CDs of the 60s-80s artistes, and a Clear 3G-4G wireless modem that clips onto the laptop. I seldom get W of St Louis except to go to Tulsa, The City, and San Antonio now and again. It all works those places.

For the Internet, we have used a pay as you go 3G hotspot, ($55 for one month unlimited), fast enough to support a Skype phone on the road. Recently purchased a 4g hotspot from Virgin Atlantic, have not used it yet. Still same pay as you go scheme. With high speed Internet in this house (AT&T Universe), we do not use it at home. We may convert to it at our next home, because DSL is all that is available, and even the high speed is slow.
Have not bought a satellite system yet. Can anyone report on the Tailgater system? Looking at the same pay as you go model.
This is a great topic for information.

We use my android smartphone with Verizon service. My phone has been 'rooted' so we can tether to it with our computers, but I understand the newer phones and plans allow this service with the standard operating system. We also have a "Wilson Sleek" signal amplifier that works well when we are waaaaaay out in the boonies. A lot (most) of campgrounds and RV parks have adequate WiFi systems in place that you can use as well.
For TV, we have a 19" flat screen/DVD combo and we either take one of the Dish Network boxes from home (oh yeah, we also have a Winegard crank-up dish on the roof) or we just watch DVDs. It seems like we never have time to watch our DVDs at home, so we take a few along on trips, in case we have time to watch them there. RV parks generally have cable TV hook-ups too. We also have a conventional antenna for broadcast TV stations.

We just cut the cable at home and bought a Roku2 box, this 4"x4" box will stream internet tv, with Amazon Prime membership there are literally thousands of free movies and old shows to watch..the roku will also play many files from a usb drive. my intent is to load up a 1 TB drive with stuff and just bring the Roku2 in the motorhome and connect the HDMI to my future 20" HD tv with custom slide-out/drop down mount above the fridge...I'll let you know how that goes. Roku will connect to any Wifi.

Carl,
When I read 'rooted' I had to laugh; here's why:
http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html#R
Scroll down to "R" and you'll laugh too!
Because Helen and I only visit for three / four months we sign up with Verizon for the 1GB plan:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=products_prepaidmb
For TV we have a Winegard amplified "flying saucer" antennae the brings in local TV, unfortunately quite often the reception and
channel selection stinks.
I've discovered that Good Sam offers this plan:
http://www.dishformyrv.com/
At the Amana GMCMI Convention I saw John Richardson packing up; he was getting the Tailgater satellite antenna down from the roof of
his GMC. I asked him how it worked and he noted it was terrific; it found the satellites automatically and provided clear reception.
I reckon this is the way we'll go this summer.
Whenever we stop at a Wally World I head for the Audio-Visual department as usually they have a big tub full of DVD's that they sell
for $5.00. Naturally they're not the latest releases but they are good movies and some great TV shows. One of them had the FIRST
Lone Ranger show followed by that seasons. I also found Zorro, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, etc. Lots of stuff from
when I was a kid!
Would love to find some of the old gangster movies starring Edward G. Robinson, Jimmy Cagney, etc.

Rob M.

Okay Rob. I have to admit that IS funny in that context, but I don't THINK that is what my son did to my phone.

It wasn't mis-spelled. "Rooting", also known as "jailbreaking" is a term for removing the operating system on a phone and replacing it with an "aftermarket" system that will allow it to do things that the factory installed system will not allow.

We use our laptops for TV and music on the road.
I use my android phone with T-mobile ($30 per month for 5GB) to create a wifi hot-spot that supports both laptops (and more). I found it gets flaky unless the cell phone signal is pretty strong so I got a Wilson booster with a roof antenna. Now, as long as there is a signal I can get connected.
But, there is not always a signal and I have to be able to work on-line or I have to stay home. In remote areas (especially on Indian reservations which seem to do their own cell service) I can't get a signal or I'm roaming. Sometimes there is no cell signal but I can sniff a wifi signal but it's not strong enough to do anything constructive. I'm looking at the Alpha AWUS036H probably with a high gain antenna on the roof and an A36 access point to create a hot spot. Anyone have any experience with it? I may mount the antenna to the TV antenna so I can raise and lower it and change the direction.

Thanks to all for replying. Lots of good recommendations and a lot
to ponder. I still have the original iphone, but I just learned that
with the later versions tethering is possible. I have the original
data plan which grandfathers me in to unlimited data so maybe I will
try that. I know AT&T SERVICE SUCKS IN A LOT OF PLACES, mostly
wherever I go, but it could be the right price for my first trip.
Television - hmmmmm - that will take much more thinking.
Anyways - thanks again to all.

A practice which was outlawed a week or so ago. The wireless companies' congressional donations have paid off. I wonder how anyone expects to enforce that law. Watch the pricwe of 'unlocked' Androinds skyrocket on ebay.
