G'day,

JimH's reply to the "transmission fluid leaking" thread got me to thinking about the Paterson engine I have to assemble when I get
back to the USA and the Caddy 500 I have here.

I did a Google search for "V-8 engine internal coatings" and found this:

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/hrdp_0612_engine_coatings/viewall.html

Which I thought was pretty interesting.

I guess you could consider it overkill but some of the processes might help engine longevity.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

Here is a photo by Arch on glyptol...
I remember SteveF uses the same -- if the block has been cleaned correctly.

Fact sheet on GLyptal indicates a temperature maximum of 275 degrees F. Might not be a good choice inside a transmission pan.

Probably the no. 1 thing you can do is nitride the crank Rob. The coatings
are a waste of money and, I've seen them come off and ruin an engine. They
refused to cover the cost of the rebuild afterwards.

We used to send crankshafts to Miami Crankshaft back in the late 60s - early 70s for nitriding.  They had a spec you ground the shaft to, and when it came back it was of the proper diameter.  And harder than anything...

I'm with Steve on this. If not applied properly, I too have seen the coatings come off and take out an engine. There may be a need for it in racing engines where the need to get the oil back to the pan is crucial, but in a 3000rpm MH....no. JWIT

Hey Rob,

Count me as the outcast. My next motor will have a bunch of coated parts.

Gary,

I've noted that you dance to the beat of a different drummer quite often! ;-)
