Mark,
We are planning to be there, but (now that no one has a job to get back to) we are planning to take a week to get there. Our plan is to go by way of Natchez Trace, Vicksburg Battlefields, Baton Rouge, NOLA, the museum at Pensacola and maybe the aquarium at down on the gulf coast.

I'm still hoping to convince my wife to bring the family to Dothan, but even I'm at a loss for what to do with a 3 year old and two 1 year olds in the Dothan area for the better part of a week. I'd be bummed to go solo since it will eat up some of my vacation that I'd rather spend with the family, but it's hard to miss the convention when it's so close to home. At the same time, it's hard to bring the family without good ways to entertain them.

Jeremy, bring them to Jim's table. I love kids and I am sure they will find Jim entertaining.
Seriously, at least come down in the car for a couple of days, if the family does not come. I am still trying to figure out just what I will do. Teri may not get to come. I hate going that far in the GMC without her. Got some work to be done on the GMC before it will drive that far. May end up sleeping in our new hybrid. Throw my portable dish and tv in so I will be set.

I'm sure I'll be there for at least some of the time. I'm waiting to see the schedule to see how much time off it will require to make what I'm really interested in seeing. As for the kids, I'm just not sure if they will come at all. I'm leaning toward probably not. My wife and I spent quite a bit of time thinking about it, even considering going to a different campground that had a pool/playground etc, but if we're going to do that it won't be "family time" anyway when I go to the convention. Defeats the purpose of being altogether. Upshot is I'll be there for a few days I'm sure, and probably with a spare bed if you need it...

If I can get Money Pit in satisfactory running
condition, I'm going to try to make Dothan.
We might be interested in joining a "train"
somewhere between home and Dothan if convenient.

Matt,
Great route you have planned. Vicksburg and Natchez Trace fascinate me.
We're going early to Pensacola area - family there. A couple of other GMCers
may get to the Naval aviation museum there before heading on to Dothan. We
need to meet up and enjoy the museum together.

I haven't been to the Gulfarium in 15 years and things could have changed a lot...better or worse. When I was there it was pretty underwhelming. If you're thinking Sea World...its not. Basically a tourist trap.
The museum at the Pensacola Naval Air station is fantastic! My wife was a bit bored but the boys and I thought it was great! I've been several times.

I'll probably be heading down to Dothan early because the DixieLanders are in charge of some setup stuff. However, if anyone on the way home is heading north on I65 and wants a diversion near the Tennessee/Alabama line, you are welcome to come by. Got power and water for two coaches.

Do the Georgia Aquarium here in Atlanta. It is impressive - worth the trip and the admission.

Georgia Aquarium is interesting that's for sure. For my money though, the freshwater side of the aquarium in Chattanooga is better. More to see and do, although less "flashy" than the one in Atlanta.

I would take you up on that. We usually stop over at a friend who is
literally three blocks from I-65. He has a stupid looking thing called a
5th wheel. He wants a motorhome but his wife doesn't like the idea (get
this) of pulling something behind. That is so silly. I guess they push
their trailer instead of pulling it. And, talk about cheap construction.
As my friend says, they have no idea how much they rattle since they don't
ride in it while moving.

I once drove by the house where he was born. It is too small to justify what they wanted for a "tour".
|
Stop at the Tupelo McDonalds. They have (at least they did last visit) quite a display of Elvis memorabilia.
And as Gene would say -- senior coffee and free wifi also.

Pensacola Naval Air Museum is not to be missed. I went with Bob twice and
I enjoyed it--just not as much as he and my son-in-law or brother-in-law.
