Greetings all -

We went a few years ago - pulling a rented Airstream travel trailer - and plan to go again this year with our GMC. Yea!!

But... it seems that the event is quite a bit more popular than I expected. I'd like to stay at Pismo Coast Village. They accept reservations six months in advance. I called today an I'm on the waiting list. Page nine. With 35 names per page.

Might anyone have any inside knowledge of a nice campground ??

Thanks in advance,
Steve W

Park on the beach, in the off road vehicle park. Might get stuck though.

Steve,

We were just in Pismo for a couple of days last week. We stayed at the county campgrounds. There are two. One is by the railroad tracks so I don't recommend that but the other, called Oceano Country Campground, is on toward the beach by the little airport. It has maybe 20 sites with full hookups. Rates have gone up since we were there last year and is not $35.00.

We were out on the beach in our Sidekick. It is tempting to take the GMC out and dry camp for $10.00 but it is a little ways down to where they allow camping so could be a little dicey in the GMC.

Steve,
About 3 exits north of Pismo is Avila Beach/ Bay San Luis. Bay San Luis Port Authority manages camp sites near the wharf, next to the beach and on the bluff over looking the beach and bay. One of my all time favorites, but I'm easy to please. Lots to see and do Comercial fishing pier, bike paths- Walk to cafes and restaurants- short drive back down to Pism for the activity there.

Check Bay San Luis web site- I don't think they reserve sites but if you can get there early you can get a spot.

There is a KOA near Avila Beach; they will take reservations. I've Never been in there,so no recommendation.

I don't know that I'd worry about the train tracks, you get Amtrak twice a
day, I've seen freight trains, but I think I've seen Amtrak more often (of
course, if the freight ran at night, I'd not see it).

You might also check Lopez Lake campground. It's about 20 minutes east of Pismo.

We always stayed out on the beach in the GMC (both the Palm Beach and
the Stretch). The GMC does fine on the hard packed sand next to the
water. We had Steve's towing pull us in from the beach to where we
wanted to park in the soft sand. We would stay a week, then call
Steve's towing to pull us out back out to the hard pack and out of the
park. Great fun to be had out on the dunes.

My daughter lives in Lompoc. Her husband takes his Jeep to Pismo regularly, so I asked her for any recommendations. Here is her reply:

I assume he's looking for hook-ups and stuff... We've only ever camped out on the dunes, and there are obviously no hook ups there. Here's one I found that looks close: http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/Pacific_Dunes_Ranch_Rv_Resort/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=ELS2&parkId=260450&topTabIndex=Camping Spot

If you go to reserveamerica.com you/he can search by zip code for nearby camping sites and make reservations through the site.

Especially on holiday weekends, it gets crazy out there!

Thank you everyone !

Gary - I'm particularly interested in your experience... being pulled in and out to the beach. How does that work ?? What did they hook up to on your coach to pull it ?? Were you simultaneously driving or was the coach dead weight ??

And... I sent the organizers an inquiry about entering a Classic RV in the show. No reply yet.

Thanks again,
Steve w

Not Gary, and I have never taken my GMC on a beach. I DO, however, drive it in soft dirt on a regular basis. Knowing I would probably get stuck, I installed recovery hooks on the front frame. Here's a picture that shows one of them pretty well:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/timing-chain-radiator-project-05-09/p34552-timing-chain-radiator.html

And another that shows both of them:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/timing-chain-radiator-project-05-09/p34493-timing-chain-radiator-project-05-09.html

I have found that it doesn't take much of a tug to get me going again, and as long as I am able to maintain some momentum, forward travel is still possible.

Here's another shot of the kind of situation I am often in:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/towing-etc/p41602-sand-dunes-2011.html

I also am running a 3.70 Limited slip final drive and 255/70R16 BFG All Terrain tires on 8" wide Dodge truck rims on the front.
