Hi - last Friday, Jan. 25, we saw a coach with Vermont tags headed north out of Key West. Anyone on this forum?? Hope they (you) did not have to go back to Vermont. COLD

My wife and I were in Islamorada for a wedding over MLK weekend, sadly without the coach, but we saw one about 10 miles north sitting outside a metal fabrication shop right along Rte 1. I was in an airport shuttle at the time, so I didn't catch the plates, but now I'm reminded to check if it was anyone we knew enjoying winter in one of my favorite places.

She rang me up, got all the dope and said "that'll be 311 bucks." I said" 3 nites not 10",,,,,,,she told me that was 3 nites. ouch,,,,95 per nite!!!!!

A classic case of supply and demand. Those RV parks are pretty full, especially peak season. Lots of returnees every year too. Pretty much all the waterfront campgrounds in FL are in high demand year round and charge high prices. And good luck trying to get some of the premiere state parks. People go on reserveamerica at midnight exactly 12 months before they plan to arrive and still get shut out.

Luckily, FL is full of campgrounds, so while you might not be able to get, or afford, a spot on the beach, you won't have to go far to find an alternative! Except, of course, if you want to be real close to Key West. Personally, the northern and middle keys are my favorite part of the island chain. The same beautiful water and sky, none of the... "extras"... that make Key West a little crazy.

Paul,

I don't know if this is the "dive" you speak of, however, here's the place Helen and I stayed when we visited several years ago. The
place was clean and tidy but a bit old. The management were nice people.

http://leoscampground.com/wp/

The big advantage to this place is that there is a bus that stops on the corner just outside the gate that takes you downtown Key
West.

For the Eukanuba Championships each year, I stay in Wekiwa Springs or Lake Louisa State Parks, both quite close to The Mouse.  I reserve a coupe of months out and don't have trouble getting a space.  Ifnyou'reretired military, there are some nice places.  Midbay Shores comes to mind - Ft Walton esentially.
On the water, they fill quickly.

We also noticed that one on the way to Key West on Tuesday. And do not know if it the same one we saw on the way north. I did check the price of RV parks in the area and they averaged $90 per nite. There was one at Marathon listed at $35 per nite, but I did not notice why it was so much cheaper. Bed and Breakfast average $200 per nite. When you have a captive audience, you can charge just about what you want.

Key West is the tourist trap of the island string. It used to be a quirky, funky artist community (with a huge naval air station) but the developers are winning the battle and turning it into a high-end extension of every other high-end beach in Florida (except there's not really any beach worth going to in Key West).

Marathon is a whole lot more laid back, and is 40-50 miles (IIRC) closer to "the mainland". Might be a better call for most folks looking to just hang out in a semi-tropical setting and fish, dive or boat, though it's still worth a drive into Key Weird just to see it. If you want to party 'til all hours, by all means, stay in Key West, which is very much a party town.

I survived about two years there (working at the NAS) and do plan to go back with the GMC some day in the not too distant future. It does hurt to pay those kind of prices to park though... (not to mention subjecting my beloved coach to that kind of salt atmosphere... yikes!).

I think the coach is the one at "Kentucky Welding". When I looked at over a year ago it appeared to be a work in process, but not for some time. Their intention was to be able to haul a couple of Harleys inside. The opening tailgate was a work of art. I think that maybe the economic turndown has relegated this project to the back burner.

Sound like the coach that has a metal "sculptured" dash. I have only seen one or two pictures (some where) and would be interested in seeing a few more.

No...

I am thinking of a coach being modified (I think in Florida) with the rear door being made into a ramp. The dash had been replaced by a custom one. The picture I saw it was still bare aluminum and had a design that reminded me of my 2008 Malibu:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/3698/2009-chevrolet-malibu-3.jpg
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/just-stuff/p47260-malibu-dash-simalr-t.html>

The coach you linked to has many VERY nice features and I would like to duplicate much of what he did to that coach with my '77. But, to be honest, I think the dash looks like something from an '70's SOB. (No offense meant.)

We stayed in Leo's on Stock Island a few years ago and the use of the public transportation to and from key west made it quite the experience. If you should stay there try to get away from the entrance, there is a contractor tool rental place and a dumpster right there and doesn't allow for much sleeping in. The hookups are full hookups though which was nice. If you should stay in key west late the cab fare for 4 back was less than $20.00. Just my 2 bits

Mike,

I spotted what could be a potential problem with this dash. I have an under dash panel that has the gages mounted in what appears to
be the same plane and I have to cover the ones to the right of the steering column at night or the illuminated gages reflect in the
windshield and its VERY distracting!

One of my TTD is to put a switch on the power that lights the gages so I can turn it off.

If done right, it could be a heads up display. Twisted Evil

No really...

I saw a vid of a smart-phone app that when left on the dash, the reflection shows your speeds and GPS turn by turn directions... right on the windshield glass!

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB4ItuVnJD0>

Might be a little much as shown, but if toned down (it is customizable) it might be something useful rather than distracting.

Hmmm..... thread drift. Rolling Eyes
