I was in Tractor Supply the other day for acetone and ATF, and an 'oil can harry' squirt oiler to use it with.  They had a special on above freezing winshield washer fluid, so I picked up a coule of gallons.  Now, normally at the checkout at TSC the clerk will ask for your zip code... which you don't have to give them, but it helps them decide what to stock in a given store and to locate their customers by store.  This time, however, the querstion was "May I have your birthdate please?"  Not address, or location or identification.  I asked and the clerk says they are told to get birthdate from everyone who buys the stuff.  Now I wonder why that is.

Note, this is the +32 washer fluid - it has no alcohol in it.  The label merely lists water and 'vegetable cleaners', whatever they may be.  So, I have emailed TSC asking what gives.  What it wish to know is, is this a bit of data TSC wants, or is the state of Georgia on the feds making them insure age to buy the stuff.  I think I'm pist over it, if it's State or Federal, a nasty letter to my legislooter is in order.  Anyone else run into this?

Many of the big box stores in NJ, walmart, HD, Lowes will verify age any time you purchase some types of aerosol paints, thinners etc. I think it has more to do with minors huffing inhalants...they actually have to type in year of birth to allow purchase to go through.

You mentioned in your first post that you where also buying acetone. That would be something that I would be more worried about kids messing with and possible abusing. Are you sure the age verification wasn't for the acetone?

OBTW: If it is just for age verification and not for identity, and they do not check MY ID, I give them the January 1st closest to my actual birthday.

Granted this works more for on line stuff like facebook.

I was thinking the acetone too. It is a key ingredient in some illicit substance making.

Well, this gets further afield, but I flashed on the family business when I was a small kid, fertilizer manufacture (Alabama Fertilizer Co and Augusta Fertilizer Works, just post wwII.)  We had a fairly good allocation for Chilean Nitrate (natural ammonium nitrate fertilizer) and it wasn't uncommon for a farmer to pick up several tons on a flatbed.  I suspect th tank on the front of the bed was for the diesel oil he ran his equipment on.  Can you imagine that setup today?  The poor agronomist would be stuffed under the jail.....

I got "carded" when I bought a couple cans of WD-40 at Harbor Freight (for cleaning tar off tools and kids, mainly). The clerk said she thought it was because the product could be "huffed" (inhaled to get high). Shouldn't be too hard to pick THOSE substance abusers out of a crowd... wow.

While dealing with a family member's substance abuse, one of the group
participants 'huffed' gasoline. Pretty sad case of handsome boy with a
psycho mother and major brain damage from the inhalation. Imagine if
they carded for that!
