Hello, I'm new to this group, so I'll apologize in advance if this topic has been covered. I did search for a while but did not find it covered anywhere.

I'm redoing the headliner in my 1978 GMC Royale. In the process of removing the old headliner, I managed to ruin a few of the old T molding splices between the sheets of plywood headliner. I like the way those splices work, so I'd like to replace all of them with similar moldings. I'm having a very difficult time finding anything like them on the market. Does anyone know of a place to buy these splice T moldings and the track they seat into. I would imagine they are sold together as a kit somewhere? Please let me know. Thank you.

It may help to post a picture of the moulding. Sometimes the application may come a different source.

Is it like this?

Richard,

At least you were kind enough to post a link.

This forum/list is actually two operations and the forum is just a mirror of the e-mail list. This really only matters with posted pictures. They show up on the forum, but the people that get the postings as e-mail will never see them.

Sorry I cannot post pictures (after several attempts)since I cannot compress them beyond 3.7KB and I do not have a way to link them, but I will be glad to email them to anyone who would like to see them. The thickness of the headliner plywood is approx 1/8". Could probably get away with 3/16". Most of what I've been able to find is a flooring molding which are typically 3/4", but I think they can be as thin as 3/8" which is still too much for me. As a side note, I'm actually replacing the plywood headliner with a glassboard headliner with no backer. Won't have to worry about mold or delamination anymore. Hopefully I've got all of the leaks fixed, but you never know....

Thanks for all of your assistance!

I thought those things could be bought at Lowe's and Home Depot. If not, I know Jim bounds has the right stuff.

Dan & Teri, thank you for the lead. I have sent a message to Jim. I did look at Menards, but have not tried Lowes or Home Depot. I think I did find the end of the Internet while looking online though! I'll post the results of my discussion with Jim for anyone else in the same boat as me.

Good. Jim B. can certainly put you where you need to be to get it. I may be looking for some too as we have a new headliner that we hope to install this summer.

Thanks Glenn. I checked these out this AM. I did not see a 2 part molding that allows the track to be installed first, then headliner, and then the push in T molding (must have a track for the T molding to press into). H molding won't work because I need to be able to fasten the butt seam on both sheets of headliner and there is no way to fasten both sheets with an H molding without revealing the rivet on one of the sheets. I think there will be too much rattle if both seams are not fastened. Thanks for the attempt, I really appreciate it!

Morning.. I am redoing my coach and the headliner is just part of it. PO had screwed aluminum strips over the joints. really looked bad. Being a Building Contractor, I always look at things that are made for one thing to be used for something else.

I am looking at a product sold for screening screen porches calld ScreenTight. It is a 2 part system. Screw base down over joint in headliner, snap cover on.. covers up screws. Product comes in a few colors other then white.. U can buy this product I know at Home Depot and most likley Lowes. Cost is less then $4.00 per 8' for base and same for cap. So should run less then $8.00 per joint.

Again I have not used it yet.. but most likley what i will try.

BTW it comes in 11/2" or 31/2" wide.

If you decide to use it please let me know how it works for you.

Yeah, Lowes has it or something similar. I think it's an excellent alternative-use idea. My only reservation is the width, though the 1.5-inch might work or perhaps it could be covered with matching headliner material if you're using fabric.

I've been looking at this stuff for years thinking that it would make a nice T-molding. Another similar item would be Wiremold raceway. Wiremold is narrower but thicker and is perhaps less adaptable as a true T since it lacks flanges along the edges. Normal stock lengths are 5' which wouldn't be optimal for coach headliner trim.

If I recall correctly someone had posted a while back that Panduit electrical raceway covers worked. I believe the 4" size was what they used.

Update on the ScreenTight snap system.

Had to go to Lowes anyway so while there picked up a set (base and cap) of ScreenTight system

I think it will work perfect for the headliner. There are a few colors, but the base only comes in black. When snaped together u can see the edge of the black base. If that bothers you could paint the base and or the cap whatever color you like.

Guys, great ideas! I really like the 1.5" screentight. I'm headed to Lowes to pick some up and give it a try. I might not get any put up for a week or two because I still have some wires to run while I've got things apart. When I get some put in I'll report back to you all. Thanks again!

Try this. Your fasteners would show but might be a good place for a string of LED lights.

If this doesn't take you there go to "building materials", Polycarbonate panels".

Brian.. took the set out to Odie that I just bought and held it up on the rear section of ceiling I have up..i think it will look great, not to mention how easy it should be to remove for repairs and not tear it up!

And the way its designed you could wrap it with material and still work like it should.
