A little introduction first,..

Retired US Navy(Submarines) followed by 18 years working in the Judicial field. Now semi-retired and preparing to move back to Texas in order to take care of my elderly parents.

I have begun the search for my little piece of Valhalla in the form of a GMC Motorhome. I'm not in too much of a hurry so I'm taking my time doing a lot of research on the subject. I think I've managed to bookmark and review every website dealing with the GMC Motorhome.

I'm not too unfamiliar dealing with so called "vintage vehicles". I own and maintain a 1974 VW Thing [Codename: Walküre (The Valkyrie)]. Surprisingly, I don't feel a need to be such a "stock Nazi" with the motorhome as I do with my VW Thing. I'm not a big fan of orange or green shag carpet. I don't mind "upgrades" or modernization as long as it doesn't deviate from the original flavor of the vehicle.

I enjoy the almost cultish community associated with having a unique vehicle.

I come across a 26 foot 1973 Painted Desert sitting in front of a truck repair garage. It's been sitting there for a couple of years now. I stopped and asked the shop owner about it and he explained that it belongs to a customer that has since moved to Arizona and that the owner may wish to sell at about $7500. Nevertheless, the shop owner wants it off his lot pretty soon.

I've just done a precursory looksee and it appears to be pretty much complete. 6K Onan (condition unknown) still sitting in the bay. Awning gone. Two rooftop ACs (condition unknown). The body needs a good cleaning and moss removal. Shocked I haven't crawled underneath to check out the frame yet. Looks to have the original (leaking) airbag setup. Shop owner stated that some engine work was done and both fuel tanks removed and cleaned. Crack on the front apron and grill just below the passenger engine access lid.

The only major body issue I see is the exterior seam above the cab. Currently looks to have several tubes of silicon holding it together. What's involved in repairing this seam? Is this issue a deal breaker?

I'm looking forward to exchanging information and recommendations with you GMCer Vets. Thanks in advance.
