I wish it was as simple as another wheel chair. We now have a chair that she transfers into to go up the ramps into the coach. The $2500 chair can go threw the door. But can't fulfill her needs. The $19,000 chair does. And that is the one that has to go in the coach. The Chevy lift van was $ 55,000. This was from her having a knee replaced. Then an infection, and the loss of her leg. This happens more then you know. She loves the rallies. So not making the door wider, really isn't in the cards. It just looks like the windows will just have 5 inches more overlap. I'm going to document this project. Never know when someone else well need to do it. Thanks again Bo Dunahugh

I believe Tom Hampton at Grandview Motorhome had a handicap capable GMC for sale a few years back. He's a clever fellow and might be able to offer some assistance.

Well, I wonder.... Could you fit two doors like on the side of a van?  It would probablt be simpler than trying to widen one, if you could maintain the structural integrity of the sidewall.  I can visualize it, but haven't the skill to iterate it.

Have you considered making the rear panel open as a hatch, and using a ramp. Jim Bounds had a hatch project underway. Should be easier than re-engineering the side of the coach.
Or, another random idea, stretch the coach at the rear, and build your new door in the stretched section ( more engineering). I seem to remember that someone has done this, making a large rear kitchen area.
Amazing operation.

Just a thought on making the window smaller.

With the early windows ('73/74) it would be fairly simple to make the window any size you want. The frame is multi-part. You could take it apart and cut the long sections to any length you need. I am fairly sure you can not cut the glass (tempered??) but you could just let them overlap... or mix and match one pane with a "bedroom" window.

Bo, do what ever you can to keep her involved. Your conversion has to meet her needs. I know because I'm in the same boat and have found out that even the best designs may need revisions to fit her unique needs.

Blaine Merrill had a rear opening coach that might be a candidate for conversion if he still has it. He had pictures of it at Amana.

Speaking up for Bob here.

He has a good coach that he's had for some time[ a Royale that's been
garaged for most of it's life. He knows the coach. That's worth a lot
compared to buying someone else's coach at whatever price. Then if he
bought one, he'd have his to sell. Where's the advantage? There is no
telling what other problems would be swapped in the process.

I floated the rear access idea past him. The hall is a bit narrow unless
resized. I believe Bob has addressed this issue.

The bedroom window and couch window thing makes sense. Seems better than
overlapping to me, too. At least, when locked, they'd help in the support
area better than overlapping and flopping free.

Bob can do welding of the aluminum. He has some design drawings so knows
what to watch for without just jumping in cold turkey and finding out (a
la Jimmie Orlando).

He also has a line on a separate door and a friend who can laser cut two
doors so that he can fabricate one from two correct halves and come up
with a whole.

He was asking if it was feasible.

Personally, he and his wife enjoy traveling in the coach and want to see
that continue. The issue is how best to support the desire, not redirect
it.

Mobility, like wireless, means different things to different people. Bob
understand his needs, his capabilities, and the challenge ahead.

BTW, Bob thinks the GMC community is tremendous and wants to get to Dothan
to experience more "tremendous".

Can she "transfer" well?  If so, a "transport chair" is very narrow with 4 small wheels.  You could set up the comfortable chair inside, get into the coach using the transfer chair then she could get into the better chair to travel.  I bought a new transfer chair for my Mom for I think it was $75 new!  I can do some measurements but I think it would go in the door.

Just a thought,

Jim Bounds

Check this 78 in Escondito for $2,000. I looks like it has a wide door.
