I have just displayed my ignorance on the 23 ft coach. Just forgot were the 23 ft door is. I'll put it another way. I need to shorten my right side window by at least 5 inches. One way is to just have the slider window over lap the fixed window 5 more inches then it does now. The right side rear slider is too narrow. So my real question would be. Is there another slider window in a GMC that is around 24 inches. As the slider window next to the door is 29.25 inches. I don't BELIEVE that my 29 inch window can be cut. Open to ideas. Thanks, Bob Dunahugh.

Bob,
You don't need to cut down ( make it narrower not shorter ) the front side window, as Jim B has said get a rear side window and use it as it is! It will provide all the space you need to widen your door. The opening needed for the rear side window is about 38" wide whereas the opening for the front window is a little over 63 1/4" wide. You will need to add some additional aluminum framing and skin to fill in the gap.

Here are the dimensional drawings for the coaches.

Can you not substitute the same size window that is used for the door or galley? May need to alter your plans somewhat, but this size is readily available.

The window in the door is as close asyou are going to get to 24" (it is 24-3/4"). This thread indicates there were door windows that had slider glass and screens: http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=158057&rid=2083&srch=door+sliding+glass#msg_158057
If a window for a door is close enough to the correct size, call Jim K or Jim Bounds and see if one of them has such a window for a door and how many dollars it would cost them to get it to you.

Bob,

I'm still a bit confused!

Here's what I think I understand:

1) you have a 23' GMC
2) you want to widen the entry door 5 inches to enable access with a wheelchair

Here's a link to the drawings that show how the body is constructed:

http://www.bdub.net/GMCdrawings/

If you click on 23' Right Side an enlarged version will pop up.

I am going to use aircraft fuselage construction terms in the following paragraphs:

1) Formers / Bulkheads = vertical sections of the GMC body structure
2) Longerons / Stringers = horizontal sections of the GMC body structure

To widen the door you will have to move the former at the rear of the door towards the back of the coach. I agree the window cannot
be cut but you can move it rearwards 5 inches also.

This is going to be one hell of a big job! The frame members are epoxied to the aluminum skin and the fiberglass. They are also
heli-arced to each other; that's what makes the GMC body so strong. That epoxy bond and heli-arc welds will have to be cut. I
removed a 2 foot stringer in the bathroom ceiling of The Blue Streak so I can install a Fantastic Fan using the tools below:

http://www.harborfreight.com/variable-speed-multifunction-power-tool-67537.html

with this blade:

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-18-bi-metal-multi-tool-plunge-blade-68912.html

I don't know if this tool and blade will work between the formers and the fiberglass, you might wind up cutting through the fiber
glass.

To put it back together and regain the strength and rigidity you will have to epoxy the longerons / stringers to the
formers/bulkheads to the aluminum and fiberglass and heli-arc them where they join as well.

The spray foam insulation is highly flammable and where you need to heli-arc the parts together must be completely clean and there
should be no foam anywhere near where you're welding so it cannot be ignited by a spark.

Seems to me it would be a lot easier and cheaper to get a wheel chair like this:

And a larger, powered wheelchair or "scooter" could be
transported on a carrier platform fitted to a Class III
trailer hitch drawbar at the rear for wider excursions
from the coach!

I was poking around on for sale sites (thanks to rcjordan's new whiz-bang tool), and found this:

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/rvs/3570788232.html

Might be a REALLY good start (or not - I haven't looked at the details for the rest of the coach). At the very least, it's a very interesting approach to the wheelchair access issue!

Bob,
The window frames in my '73 are in 4 pieces. The top and bottom sections are straight and could be cut to any length you desire. I'm not sure what year coaches had this setup but if yours are different I'm sure you could find an early window and cut it.

From the photos it looks like the shower capability has been removed in
favor of wheelchair-accessible vanity/sink. That seems to be a descent idea.
It widens the path all the way to the front. My assumption then is that one
would use the shower at a facility on those occasions. Of course, many years
ago it wasn't common to shower or bathe on a daily basis.

FYI, deodorant was created in France for that very reason.

Actually, I think it was PERFUME that was invented
in France for that reason. As of the late 60s and
early 70s, the NON-use of bathing and deodorant was
still common in Germany! It was definitely worse
in Paris and I can hardly imagine what it would have
been like elsewhere in France at that time!
