I have developed a power steering leak somewhere. I changed the oil and checked the PS fluid and the reservoir was almost empty. I can see to the bottom of housing(that's low).
The fluid is reddish. The Prestone PS fluid I bought was clear/yellowish (I have not filled it up yet). At the parts store I also saw where they have a "stop leak" power steering additive. Another parts guy indicated that some older vehicles used transmission fluid in the PS reservoir. I did not see any reference in the manual other that GM 10500017 for fluid replacement.
What would be your choice of power steering fluid?

The GM maint manual supplement says GM PS fluid Part 1050017 or equiv for 77-78. I have box roughness with Dexron. You should be able to find Prestone ir house brands of PS fluid. If a hose is bad replace it.

I go with Dexron in the TH425 and Power Steering fluid in the steering. Stop leak might work on a shaft seal, but if a rubber hose is failing you are asking for a delayed major fail with stop leak. Also given the wiper system and filter screen, I wouldn't put stop leak in mine.

Stop leak will only work on shaft seals. I have used it many times for seal leaks. You need very little. If it doesn't work the first time, it will never work. If it works, I have found that it usually will work for a long time. If you don't have a seal leak, don't bother. Just my experience...
