Hi All - I am trying to make up a couple of brake lines and can not seem to make consistently 'even' double flares. I get about one in five the way I think they should be. I do not recall having this much trouble when I did this in the past. All 'trade secrets' are appreciated.

It sometimes helps to put a drop or two of brake fluid on the "flare adapter" for the 1st stage and the 45° part of the tool for the 2nd stage. Also, being very careful to have exactly the right amount of tubing exposed above the bar part when the tube is clamped in helps with consistency as well.

I gave up on double flares. I used single 37 degree flares as much as possible now,
Easier to do ( like possible) and actually reusable.
double flares are not supposed to be reused, yes everyone does, but youre not supposed to.
Yes you do need to bye 37 degree fittings.
Did I mention they are reusable?
