Hi - Even though I'm out of state for the week in Madison,Wisconsin, I
dropped my 1973 GMC Painted Desert off at the transmission shop before I
left. In order to get a good check-up, some maintenance and an opinion
about the condition I left it for the entire week I'm gone.
.....Well, I just got a text saying that *first gear is gone*, there is
nothing he can do with it and I need a "new" transmission. Currently its
the 400.
It seems drivable and I have put about 250 miles on it. Just replaced the
fuel lines and several other things that were keeping me from giving the
tranny a good test.
I am a Park Host at a County Park here in San Diego and don't absolutely
have to do anything right away because I live in it and don't have to drive
it down the mountain much. I won't be traveling anywhere till summer when I
have a 1700 mile trip planned in some mountainous northern Cal territory.
Do I have do change this thing out or complete re-build? Are there other
options? Am I risking being left by the side of the road?
The price I am being quoted for a complete re-build is $2,800 to $3,200.
The GMC had not been driven for 8 years and I suspect the fluid had not ben
changed for an additional 8 years. I suspect there is a lot of sediment in
the thing -keeping it from shifting right -but I haven't yet spoken to the
technician.
My shadetree mechanic, Rolando says he is looking for options such as
something of an upgrade to possibly a 4 speed or something stronger.
Should I leave it at the tranny shop till I get back to move it home to the
campsite and just live in it? OR should I give him the green light to go
ahead and re-build it? The shop is 80 miles from home.
I live in the GMC so I'm not missing it so much while out of town, which is
why I'm considering giving him the green light to start the work.
What other trannys are compatible?
Is there any good news out there or advice?
Thanks for your advice,
Tim J
