I thought it was the blue flasher in a clip up by my steering column. I purchased a LOUD flasher and as I was replacing it I realized that the flasher was still clicking while I had the old one out. Can't see crap up there and can't locate it by sound. Any hints?

Sorry, Kerry, but I don't remember where it is. Seem to recall a clip into
the back side of the instrument panel, but I'm not sure. And I don't think
the manual shows it. Someone on GMCNety will know.

Kerry,

On my '73, it was easier to get at from the top than underneath. It was in a clip and I remember looking for it through the windshield when I put the sounder on. It was up by the big instruments.

According to Figure 19 on the Maintenance Manual, Chassis Electrical section # 12-15 the uniti is lower right hand or the gauge cluster dial when looking at the instrument panel.

Kerry,

I don't know where it is but getting the back of the dash off is a bitch! There isn't enough clearance on the left side between the
dash and the windshield. Be careful removing it. Once you've got it off it's a good idea to trim it as shown in this picture:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/alternator-light-77-78/p2563.html

It will be much easier to take on and off after trimming.

You might be lucky and a PO may have trimmed it already.

Regards,
Rob M.

Found the **&%$$) thing! Went for a drive and noticed my new LEDs weren't flashing. The warning flasher button works but the turn signals didn't.

Figured out how to pull the back of the instrument panel off (two screws, one on each end). Pretty much in the center below the guages it is in a spring clamp. Replaced the original flasher with a new LOUD unit and everything is good.

An added benefit is I realized that my whole dash is rotten, cracked, and about to fall apart. I guess I'll be building an aluminum dash next... Rolling Eyes Laughing

Geez Kerry - your spending for aluminum must rival my winter propane bill for the barn!

Aluminum isn't THAT expensive. A 4x8 sheet of .063 3003 is about 80-85 bucks. Most everything I've made has been with drops from other projects.

I was noticing today that the dash in my parts coach is actually in good condition. I could swap it over but I suspect if I have to deal with removing the old, I'll do something new. I really don't enjoy wiring and electronics.

Electronics are no harder than plumbing, except that the pipes, valves, accumulators, etc are all smaller. Laughing Fortunately, the coach electronics are simpler to comprehend and troubleshoot than today's vehicles.

Kerry,
If you haven't seen it yet, check out Ken H.'s dash build on the photo site. And while you're at it re-plumb your dash air ducts.

When the electrics leak you only have to change underwear.  Leaking pipes require more.

I can follow a circuit. My biggest problem is seeing the darn wires. Working upside down, inside out, with a mirror and a flashlight with trifocals seems to be the norm when doing wiring....at least my norm. I hate it.

The wires are a lot easier to see and follow when the dash board is out.

Kerry,

Well it sounds like you might be kin of mine when it comes to electricity / electronics. I too can follow circuits but I have a hell
of a time figgerin' stuff out!

I reckon the side of my brain that processes "electricity" is challenged! ;-)

Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems come easy. I could have a nice dinner if I got a dollar for every time I heard; "electric
circuits are the same as mechanical systems, wires are like pipes, a resistor is like an orifice, a diode is like a check valve, and
so on.
It doesn't help!

I can work electrical problems out but I need to be all by myself, it needs to be quiet, and I need to concentrate 110%.

I too have problems seeing the wires - trifocals.

Pick up a 'Hare and Hound'.  Usually, all you need is the ends of the same wire and it will find them quickly.

I think he's referring to a tone generator that you hook to a wire and as you try to find it, the snooper gets louder as you get close to it.

I think I bought one based on someones recommendation here a few months ago...now where did I put it?

Try Fox and Hound, tone generator and probe used to trace wires.

This is a link to the thread where it was discussed:

I ordered one from CircuitSpecialists.com Yeah, HF has them cheap but I don't like to buy things I really need to count on from HF. I have half a dozen of the HF voltmeters that they give away with purchases (and god knows how many crappy flashlights. Shocked Very Happy ) Today, I attempted to use a new HF voltmeter in the coach...doesn't work. Dead on arrival.

HF has some good stuff and some crap...perhaps mostly crap.
