The door face of the dual voltage refrigerator I got from a parts donor has an offensive message scrawled in it with gray spray paint.
Does anyone know of a way to remove only the spray paint while leaving the original paint, or am I stuck with repainting the panel?
It is an OEM fridge from a 73 Sequoia parts donor. Not really fond of the parrot green of the door, but it does match the interior of the 73 Sequioa I bought from Kerry Pinkerton (which had a non-functional dormitory fridge in the hole).

Another forum posted that WD40 removed spray paint from a relatively new car's exterior, complete with pictures. I had a chance to try it just last month when permanent black laundry marker got on some new white appliances.

It worked pretty well for me, though the last faint smudge required acetone.

I've seen "vandal spray remover" somewhere....can't recall where. You might check with some paint stores.

Oops - you said Goof-Off dint work.  Well, you can use rubbing compound carefully, but you will then probably have to polish the whol;e door.  I got a junque dual voltage in my SOB salvage machine.  What make/model is yours?  If they're the same, you can have the door pane off this one.

Absolutely. That's why I tried it first. (I'm also currently wondering what that caulk-removal stuff posted earlier will do regarding lifting paint and permanent marker ...probably worth a shot.)

Also, add oily acetone (fingernail polish remover) to the 2nd string of things to try. If it doesn't work, up the ante to full-strength acetone.

I only resort to rubbing compound as a last resort. If it is the last hope I use the glass/ceramic range-top stuff first as it is the mildest. I also usually try Milk of Magnesia at this stage. If I have to raise the abrasion factor, my next step up is drywall compound.

I should note that in my appliance salvation listed above it was a real Rub-A-Dub marker which I've found the ink has the best bite on the market -even worse than spray paint.

If it's enamel (probably) it will be hard to get off. The enamel reducer that might make a dent is probably as expensive as repainting to door. I used vinyl shelf paper in wood grain to make small repairs on my lower wall panels and it looks fine. Couldn't hurt to try it before you paint and see if you like it.

When other methods didn't work, I used lacquer thinner.
It softens up the paint, so don't use too much....

Markers are much worse.  GoofOff will remove rattle can spray paint.  Denatured alcohol will remove >most< of a permanent marker, but dependibng the surface, not all of it.  How much comes off depends on how porus th surface is.  If it's really slick, alcohol will usually get all of it.

You might want just pull the panel and cover it with a nice vinyl to match
your interior. Either that or go to a local metal store and get a piece of
polished 22 gauge stainless steel for the front.

Thanks

If I make the fridge look too good, I will have to dress up the whole interior. Wish I had the energy for that...

If it is a smooth laminate similar to Formica then lacquer thinner will work and won't damage the surface. If it is an uncoated thermoplastic the thinner will attack it. Lacquer thinner will take any spray paint or marker off.
When we are trying to remove paint/ink or other staining from vehicle surfaces in my body shop we start with the least corrosive solvent we have and work our way up to lacquer thinner when all else fails. The scale Is as follows,

Citrus cleaner non petroleum based

Dx 330 wax and grease remover petroleum based mild solvent which is safe on all hard surfaces (ppg)

Dt basecoat reducer which is a petroleum based reducer for ppg basecoat color systems

When the above has not worked then lacquer thinner is used. Lacquer thinner use should be avoided on acrylic materials as in will melt them.

If none of the previously mentioned products work, match the graffiti paint
and find a tagger to finish the job. Some of them are very skilled. Take a
good look at moving boxcars on trains sometime. (grin) I sometimes have
removed signs painted on delivery vehicles that have modern
basecoat/clearcoat paint with easy off oven cleaner. CAUTION use this with
good gloves and keep in mind that your next step will be aircraft stripper
if it lifts the paint. What Todd says is a very safe approach. I might add
3M adhesive remover after the citrus cleaner. Just what I have had success
with.

take the door panel off and turn it around other side may match front. i did a door panel out of plastic panel from big box store. it is neutral white and is useful as a white write on board for notes. it could be painted if you feel the need.

I can take a look. I should take the door off to work on it, and if I end up repainting the panel, it will need to come out of the frame anyway.
