We are looking for recommendations as to which laptop computers are the sturdiest and most reliable these days.

Susan often uses her laptop for navigation while we are motorhoming, and the bouncing has taken a toll on the hinges of some models.

She also uses her laptop on Amtrak and during other travels - it certainly doesn't just sit on a desk somewhere.

She was pretty happy with several Gateways over the years, but her current model is a Toshiba, just over a year old and it has already needed the hard drive and memory replaced (under warranty) and now the CD drive isn't working and has to be replaced.

Any suggestions for a reliable replacement? She teaches online, and needs dependability above all else.

She's using Windows 7 right now, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

the best is any used apple, it is better than a new pc. APple is not the richest company in the world for nothing.

get and ipad as well and iphone. I am sorry but it is hard to be honest about these things.

without someone acting out survival for the pc, but Apple is best from an apple store and get some lessons free

from the one on one so you can break on through to the other side - apple rules. for many reasons.

it is not even close to compare.

I'll second this. Macbook or Thinkpad.
Apple care is worth every penny.
Switching to MAC from Windows is easier than people think.

an apple store will fix anything free, or it has for me, a pc has $100 check and tell you the bill everywhere i have seen.

apple cost a little more now but it sells for more latter as well. getting a used macpro is better than a new pc. they are not

virus prone as well. All the police and firemen i know use apple at home. steve jobs is not the most known person on earth

I have owned Thinkpads, used Thinkpads for over 20 years, and hauled them all over the world. They come with a three year warranty but I have never had to have one fixed. I did drop one once and broke a screen. They replaced the screen and cover for free in my apartment in France even though the machine was from the US. I am currently using a old T-43 that is around 10 years old. Someday I'll get another one when I determine I need some additional storage, feature, or something like a solid state hard drive.

Laurie also has a new IBM/ Lenovo Thinkpad. My daughter has a Toshiba that I have had to fix twice now for poor mechanical design problems.

Why would I ever want or need Apple Care? Is that some kind of maintenance agreement for extra bucks on an Apple laptop?

Please note: I am a biased retired IBMer.

Interesting. I found switching from Windows to Apple a real pain.

iTunes is the worst!

Of course the real problem is all of them (MicroSoft, Google, Apple) want
to completely take over your computer/online world and often
refuse to work together.

Imagine a light bulb bought in Arizona that would not work in Florida.
It a little like that for some of us.

I have the same problem. What really peeves me is downloading something and they tack on an additional tool bar or program that I do not want.

I built a new Thinkpad for a friend recently and made Google and Firefox the default browser. He did not mind Firefox but when Google displayed instead of Yahoo he went nuts. He could not figure how to get to his email or anything else. I finally reluctantly put Yahoo as his default browser and he went away happy. How he ever got started using Yahoo is beyond me.

I still end up spending hours with him on the phone when he can not figure out some simple thing. He also has a very poor performing DSL connection so I can not Teamviewer" into his machine to see what he is doing. He refuses to change providers. I finally last time told him to go to the library and connect from there so I could see what he is doing.

Every one of these major sites want to control your machine.

That is what it is. The thing about Apple is that Apple Stores have genius
bars and those have sharp, well paid, staff. Bring your machine in, and
they fix it, fast and reasonable prices (well, for OEM parts). They will
help you figure it all out. The unibody laptops are fairly tough. Get an
external drive, use Time Machine (nice automated backups).

If you can support yourself, get a used Thinkpad. I have one running Bodhi
Linux 2.1.

I hear the Microsoft employee store is a good place to shop for laptops, if
you have access.

Part of it depends on your own strengths and weaknesses. I'm cheap and
geeky. Some people just want it to work, and are willing to pay.

if you are in video, apple is light years ahead of pc's if you are not in video you are light years behind the internet.

It is hard to tell someone that they are not modern if they do not use apple. but apple is more modern.

I have never paid for anything at the genius bar at an apple store they have fixed anything, i have never had a problem

with an apple computer. I did have a hard drive after 5 years go down, i went and bought one and put it in my self it was 60 dollars.

I used it for a year or so and traded it for a newer used one for about $100 difference and used it for 2 years now. i have a mac pro to use

for final cut 7 and X, this is used for video mainly. apple does micro soft faster than a pc they do both now why just have pc soft ware when you can have

both for the same price, or $200 more faster. To get help is free. Also the apple store gives you free lessons on how to use it.

PC does not do both and they are slower. An ipad may be better than a computer for you. check the 4th line hyper link. 17 million sold.

here is a view of apple products in the movies. why live in the past. get the most modern tools.

a real bad time to buy new hardware

- apple and ms both just fired their os team leaders
- don't buy win8 yet it is hard to work ( and is all you can buy)
- apple costs 3x to 5x more than win machines
- buy only win7 or xp for win machines (if you can)
- use "logmein" to do remote help on win systems ( I keep 8 systems up
every night)
- dvd's are dead, have not written a dvd, or cd in 2 years (too small)

smart devices PPPT, (pads, pods, phones, and tablets)
- great for ,email, browsing, social networking , etc.
- pppt devices not too good for real computing,-- thumb drives, hardware
control, printing
- must be a hundred devices to choose from

going to be a tough time
- i am collecting old systems till market settles out
- not doing " os updates" on pppt devices ( apple genius's cannot make old
ones work)
- isp suppliers - screwing us big time, by raising prices 5x (we are slaves
to them)
-

JWID
I own all these devices
i am sorry, but as of now , I have no recommendations

We used to use Thinkpads, with good results.  Currently, Humpus Peckers are the anointed brand and I got maybe ten of them in use, also without a lot of trouble.  We use iPads in some service.  The difference is this- if suitable software is available for the Apple, it usually loads up and runs fine without much help.  If none exists for the use you contemplate, you're SOL with theApple.  The PC will take a bit more prodding at times, but you can 'roll your own' where necessary.  We have a fair amount of legacy sopftware which is specific to broadcasters, so we will likely soldier on wioth PCs and Windows for the foreseeable future, and add whatever apps mighyt be appro[priate for the Apple stuff.

Subject: Re: [GMCnet] Laptop Computer

Thinkpad or Toughbook. The only problem I've had with Toughbooks is they never die. We have 2 W7s and 1 R7 still kicking after years of general business service.

Thinkpads are recommended to me by people I know to be competent in hardware but I do not own any.

Most of our daily use is on an ipad. But, as some have mentioned above, if the app doesn't exist or you can't use/access the cloud (google drive, for instance) then you are SOL.

Android is going to end up dominating the app world and some tablets are getting inexpensive. Over the holidays, a family member asked me to set up a ZTO N15 which the got on a Amazon sale for $130. It's running gingerbread and could install from the Play app store, so with Chrome installed I was able to make it a decent machine for them to use.

if you really want rugged, Panasonic toughbooks as already mentioned or Dell rugged laptops can really take a beating.

Modern laptop hard drives are so much tougher than before. My little Asus ePC netbook has really been bounced around while running in my cars and GMC and still ticking. And it has no DVD drive, so the external one usually stays packed away from bumps. As Ken mentioned if you could find one with a solid state drive, even more rugged as as well as quick.

If she is running legacy software, you'll want to avoid win 8 for a while.

http://www.apple.com/why-mac/

pc is cheap, if price is the big deal then i would get an apple used that is the same price as a new pc, because i love the apple mind set.

plus i can sell it back for a newer used one and get a better used one for the same price as a new pc, i have a friend that has a computer store

he gets really good used apples. I bought two used i macs from him, i bought one new macbookpro from the apple store and one ipad and iphone.

i love this stuff. They did have a map problem with the new iphone 5 but i have a 4s and sticking with it

the apple imac or macbook or macbookpro

does not have to have norton programs, and it makes people think you are rich and they try and borrow money from you. -joke.

I had a lot of trouble with the pc stuff, it would break and then i would fall in that spiral of getting it fixed and getting ripped off

over and over with high cost and stated it cost as much as an apple would have. This is what happened to you. you stated that one broke

> her current model is a Toshiba, just over a year old and it has already needed the hard drive and memory replaced (under warranty) and now the CD drive isn't working and has to be replaced.

When you buy a new pc it can seem half the price of an apple, but with norton soft ware and having it fixed later

it ends up being twice as much. This is what happen to me. http://mashable.com/2012/07/03/mac-vs-pc-sales/

buy the computer that has fruit on it. That is my suggestion. I have never felt i made a mistake. apple does them both faster.

go to an apple store and act like you are in church. Work with the helpers and listen to them, let them give you lessons free

then when you buy one they give you more lessons and then you will be saying to your friends wow i am an apple person now.

i do pc and apple on one computer faster and if anything goes wrong they fix it free. And nothing goes wrong for a long time.

Over the last 30 years, I've bought more computers for work, hame, and the kids (can't seem to get them totally off the payroll) than I'd like to count. It seems that all the PCs are getting cheaper and I've had issues with many brands. My wife and kids all use Apple with absolutely no complaints, and the Apple Genius Bar is wonderful for getting answers and resolving issues.

However, I find my iPad does 99% of what I need for home use,,and my laptop is used very infrequently anymore. It really does come down to what you need the computer to do. The idea of solid memory modules without spinning discs certainly seems the most reliable, but does come with a price (MacAir).

As tablets evolve, it may be the end of the laptops as well. The way technology is going, the answers we're giving may be obsolete in 6 months anyway!

Yeah, I have had several of the asus netbooks and they held up well. Good choice if you don't buy an underpowered one.

I suggest you around in the reviews on newegg, too.

very rich people trade in their computers very early, go to a very rich area computer store and get used apples with all the software on it

already, this is cheap and works great. i pad is a good way to go as stated. The main thing about apple is they fix it free or tell you what to do free

and will tell you how to use it free. This is very practical and they do both pc soft ware now and os mac software and they are faster than any pc doing so.

snow leopard is the best to get used. tiger is to old. lion is to new. try and find a snow leopard mac book pro, or i mac if you want it on a stand.
