Okay, getting ready to head up to Omaha next Friday. Going thru my checklist(s). One of the things I wanted to do was calibrate my tranny dipstick via the Mueller Way.
1. I have an aftermarket tranny dipstick, a small diameter tube running to the drivers side hood access, and a long skinny plastic dipstick.
2. I ran the engine for a minute or so.
3. I removed the modulator. No fluid ran out, and I guess I could see some fluid WAAAAYYYY down there with my flashlight.
4. I said "yikes".
5. I poured ATF right into the governor orifice, rather than force feeding ATF into the 1/4" dia tube up front.
6. Poured in 1 qt, then a second, then a third.....finally I got ATF up over the smaller diameter hole the governor shaft goes down into....after 6 freaking quarts. I stopped there thinking I have really messed up. Please note that another quart will probably fill up the "hole" of the governor.
Yes, those of you smarter than me (all of you) probably noticed that I removed the governor and not the modulator PER THE INSTRUCTIONS.
I am ASSuming that the removal of the modulator will get me back to where I want to be after loosing all of that precious Mobil 1.

Also, I looked at my spare modulator, ordered per the parts interchange book, and it is physically smaller than the one that I have now.
Modulator was pulled, ATF drained into a clean container, modulator reinstalled.
Procedure completed.

Larry,
Some questions:
Re the spare modulator:
1) what was smaller - the external housing or the part that goes into the trans?
Re the fluid level:
1) how much fluid drained out?
2) where did the full mark wind up on the dipstick?
Regards,
Rob M.

The fluid was at the low mark on that dipstick so I marked the stick per the instructions. The modulator I have as a spare is a Pioneer 747001. The body is smaller but the shank seems to be the right size.
I would guess that about 6 quarts drained out. I didn't measure it, Bob.

SIX QUARTS!
WOW! I wonder what would have happened to the trans if you drove the GMC that overfilled?

Rob,
From My experience, it would have blown 4 quarts out the breather right away and waited to blow out how ever much more it wanted to until he was someplace that the puddle would be an embarrassment. (Why I have the L and a catch bottle.)
