My coach is for sale.
It doesn't matter what I do. This piece of shit just keeps taking and taking and taking and gives back precisely dick.
The ONE thing I thought I could count on was the Manny Transmission. But no. On the eve of the one little getaway we have been planning for months, out of nowhere, the damn thing will not shift out of first. linkage looks fine, hoses are right. Level appears fine idling, level, but runs like there is no fluid in it. added a wee bit anyway to verify. No dice.
Coach has brand new furnace, brand new carrier low profile heat pumps (2), brand new Dometic 3-way frige that has never even been used, the usual honda leather seats, new just about everything else, seland toilet, custom water tank and all brand new plumbing, a newly rebuilt carb from Jim B, rockwell intake, yadda yadda yadda.
F*ck it. I'm going to buy a NEW travel trailer.

I feel your pain as old machines can be very frustrating when they break down.
Silly question, but could it be the governor drive gear? I seem to recall that this is what will happen if it goes away.
Good luck on whatever path you choose, life is too short to arrive upset!

I know there's a lot of money in the GMC motorhome industry because I personally put it there.

Even easier. the kickdown switch. For no reason this 40 year old part decided to fail. Interestingly, no matter how far I push the gas pedal, it still doesn't engage it. I just disconnected the damn thing.
I'm still seriously thinking of selling. My new truck drives so nice, A trailer is very tempting. Before the GMC, I was going to convert a nice stout cargo trailer to a rugged travel trailer. Hell, I have all the parts to do that now, I might be money ahead in doing just that and selling the GMC as a nearly empty core...

Chris,
I understand and feel your pain. Let's face it - it is a money pit. If you don't just love the GMC for what it is, or was, and/or you just love working on it because you love to work on mechanical things then I agree - fix the tranny and let her go.
We'll miss you but we will understand.

This just SCREAMS "governor." It's an inexpensive plastic part, and
results in the symptoms you describe.
When I was divorced and left with almost nothing to my name other than
my 68 Catalina, a bicycle, some computers, and my clothes, I thought
that my recently and expensively replaced 455 engine had developed a
horrible problem. White smoke was belching from the exhaust. I had
visions of a cracked head or something else expensive or irreperable.
It was just about the last straw... I was barely 30 and the world was
coming to an end. I thought of just killing myself and being done with
it all.
The Pontiac mailing list came to the rescue, though. They correctly
diagnosed the problem. Turned out to be just a broken vacuum modulator
on my transmission, sucking ATF into the engine and burning. A few
dollars and half an hour later using one wrench and a screwdriver, and
she was shifting correctly and running clean. Since then, that car's
been to California and back, and re-enacted the route from Smokey and
the Bandit in the inaugural Bandit Ran.
My point is, feel free to scream and vent. We have all been there...
but what looks like the end of the world may only be a small
relatively easily fixed problem... albeit one that's not immediately
apparent.
As a matter of fact, I was just to the point of giving up on my Onan.
The guys here on the list talked me down out of my tree, gave me
advice, and even a clueless newbie like me was able to get my Onan
running again. Of course, I promptly tore back into it once I got it
running to see what ELSE I could fix. :)
So. Don't give up. It may just be the little governor gear dealie.

Chris
I know the feeling. I have a 2011 truck that pulls my 18' travel trailer very easily. The trailer has as much or more room than my 26' GMC and the truck is certainly reliable. I bought the trailer to take to some places that I just do not want to take the GMC.
I have had my share of failures on the road and at home. A failed transmission in rural Arkansas comes to mind. But it worked out and I am here to tell about it so I guess it was not so bad. This winter I plan on leaving for a while and I will be taking the GMC. It is just more fun to travel in the GMC when it is running well. Much of it is within our control with good maintenance procedures but as so many of us learn, sometimes stuff just happens to 40 year old machines.
I have way more into my coach than I can ever get for it but I too have considered selling. Take the loss and get out now. Sort of like the stock market some days. But I can not bring myself to that yet. Like I said, the GMC is more fun.
I appears that you are doing a great job of rebuilding your coach. I would say to hang in there for a while until you get in some good trips. And they will happen. That will help you decide whether it is worth all the work and frustration.
Good luck.

Go back under and reconnect the wiring and then bend the contact tab
so it activates the switch again. Ken Burton is an expert at this.
Failure to do this enabled this deaf guy to not hear the engine knock
and consequently a broken engine.
Easy fix, Even Ken can do it! <g>

Roger,
His is stuck the opposite way. His is always depressed or on. Most of them are not engaging the switch at all so it stays in the off position. The failure to engage the switch is caused by people pressing too hard (all the way to the floor) and bending the rod. Then they believe the cable is stretched. I simply bend the rod back where it belongs to fix it. That what I did on yours many years ago.
He needs to free up or replace the switch. It is a simple slider switch used on many, many GM vehicles. His temporary fix will work for now. In fact Gene F. has crippled his permanently. I do not like that approach especially after your engine failure caused by detonation. But retarding the timing or being careful to down shift manually under high load and low speed operation will work as a substitute.

I carry a spare gov assembley with me now in the Eldo.About 15 years ago on a trip from Nashville to Lauderdale in the middle of Georgia,my speedo went to 0 and the car shifted to 2nd and when I pulled over it would not go forward or reverse.$1200 and
a new trans and on to Lauderdale.Afterwards I found out it was the little nylon speedo gear that fubared the whole thing. That
gear is about $10 so I got ripped off by the middle of Georgia tranny shop.I have never been on the side of the road before that
and have not been since.
