I've wondered about this a bit so I thought I'd ask what most folks do.
I've seen a coach or two where people remove their original propane tank and use the standard gas grill (BBQ) bottles that can be swapped out almost anywhere.
This seems like a really good solution because, on the road or campground, propane is spendy but swapping out gas bottles is quick and easy and I wouldn't have to drive my coach anywhere to get more propane. There are 5-6 places I can swap BBQ bottles within 5 miles but its a 20 mile drive to have my original tank filled. There are five Dollar Generals within 5 miles and they swap out the bottles for $20 each.
I know that you are not supposed to take a BBQ bottle through tunnels.
Just wondering what folks thoughts are on this?

JimB says it's a lot of work to get dual 20# cylinders in Coachmen models. Phooeey! I like swapping them at Lowes or Dollar General and have the home's gas logs set up for that.

Sir: I have a '23 with the small stock propane tank. Only propane I have is heater and stove. I filled the tank in 2006 at Camping world and again in 2010 at J. I still have over 1/2 tank. I would not think the difference in price of propane would warrant the time and trouble to change a working certified rv tank to a bbq grill tank system. I did`t think it cost $20 to fill mine. It has been a while tho...

We purchased a 25# fiberglass LP gas tank this fall to use as a supply to heat the coach when parked at our winter camp in Florida. I have it set up so I can use either the tank on the coach or the external LP tank. Last year I took a 20# tank along when we went to Tucson. Worked great a runs almost a $1.25 less per gallon of LP than having it delivered by an LP truck plus del charge. I will take some pictures today and post tonight of the setup that I use.

If you change the RV approved tanks to home use LP tanks, you might be into a hassle, if inspected entering into tunnels. The Chesapeake Bridge and Tunnel Complex will not allow home LP tanks in the tunnels. I'm sure that other tunnels may view the small LP tanks will a close eye.

What would be the difference in a motorhome with the BBG tanks and a pull behind camper with 2 BBQ tanks on the front frame. Surley the Norfolk inspectors are not gonna stop every camper?
