I am currently rebuilding my 73 sequoyah. What is my most reasonably priced method of converting the points to an hei distributor. I was setting my timing and was showing a big fluctuation in the rpm using coil wire 1 and an engine analyzer. It does seem to be missing. New wires and plugs, but not points. I really just want it to be reliable.
does anyone have a used distributor that could be purchased. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Points are cheap easy and reliable,Hell they only used them for almost 100 years.I
feel you could have worn bronze gear on the disto shaft or worn timing chain.Do
you have a proper 30 degree angle?

The easiest solution is to convert your points distributor to electronic using a Pertronix module. That way you do not have to do the sheet metal knocking on the air cleaner housing. Also you will not have the problems with HEI module and coil failures. If you can afford it the BEST way is to get a redone distributor from Dick Paterson (Springfield Ignition) along with a dist cap with HEI style posts and use the HEI type wires. A new high output coil is a good upgrade at this time. The other modifications needed (bypassing the ignition ballast wire) is the same for either the Pertronix points conversion or the HEI conversion.

Sorry about the hasty reply,I still have points in my car. They cost under $10.Every
person ever that sees my car tells me to get rid of them.I have to always still be
smarter than the car.The cool thing for me would be going from a 30 gap to a 60
and blasting a nice spark.I also feel that the latest Petronix version lets you keep
the 7-9 volts from the resistor wire.Best of luck no matter what you try.

My suggestion when you want to upgrade to HEI for the 73 & 4 coaches is just replace the entire dist to the later model unit. Replacement module, coil, pickup, cap and rotor can be had anywhere so maintenance of the system is increased. We have a complete, all new HEI late model dist with new cap, rotor, module, pickup, coil and all for $195. You would need new plugs (Delco rapid fire #7) and a new HEI plug wire set but putting all that in you have an all new high voltage ignition system. Pitch that old dist completely, chances are the bushings are worn out anyway,

Dick, where are you located? I may have missed that. I have a 74 that has the hei. If you plan to keep the GMC, for use, then do it right. I have Pertronics in my Mustang and Vdub but in the GMC we have a newer Dick Paterson hei distributor. Do it once and be done. Move on to next project.

Hi Derick, I bought the MSD type distributor from Dick Patterson. It works very well and can use it with the standard size air cleaner. It has never needed repairs (2 years) that the guys with the HEI type always talk about.

Mickey, Red may indicate a Dick Patterson, since every distributor that I have seen from him is red. Including Mine.
Do not use Rapidfire plugs. The design has been changed are they are not the same plug as they used to be. The recommended plug is NGK XR5IX, gapped at 0.038. (per Dick Patterson)
Tom, MS II very happy with Dick Patterson Carb and soon to be installed HEI.
