Check the ground on the alternator although it should have direct, metal to
metal, contact on the engine bracket mounting that should be connected back
to battery ground. Just finished a major alternator replacement on my '93
Saab that quit charging on a road trip and, after 20 years, decided to make
the change. Still had charging problems with the new one and, after adding
a new ground wire, I now have 14 volts, with the engine running, at the
battery. Same problem years ago with a Volvo 240 who also uses a rubber
grommet on the alternator to reduce vibration but I guess I didn't check
the simple things that can cause major problems.

This is a good idea.

I recently chased a problem on my boat that has a Ford V8.....nearly drove me
and the auto electric place nuts. When I replaced my GMC ignition system with
Dick Pattersons Springfield Ignition it came with a separate ground wire
connected to the case of the distributor, installation instructions said to
connect it up to a good clean ground on the engine block. Then one day a
light went on and I went out to my boat, drilled and taped the distributor
casing and ran a separate ground wire......DANG!! No more problem ! Apparently
19 years of boat use with the V8 sitting in a damp environment created enough
corrosion to disrupt the metal to metal ground on the distributor. 2 years I
struggled with this problem and it had a 20 minute fix !
