Reading through the fuel winterization thread reminded me of a great old upgrade for carb systems that I might like to explore; injecting Marvel Mystery Oil directly into the intake manifold. If you're unfamiliar with MMO, a quick search here at GMCnet will turn up a few good stories about this additive (not just for fuel, we used to pour it in the crankcase). We used to run it in our small business fleet back in the day when we had gas-burners, and -somewhere, somehow- we had a system made by Marvel (or at least co-branded) that put a pint jar under the hood to directly inject it. I could make another but since I'm going Retro, I wonder if anyone has seen any NOS somewhere?

Well, duh-on-me. Many thanks. I don't think of ebay much except to track vehicle & boat (mostly unrealistic) prices.

Some will say MMO is a scam. Others will say its awesome. Alls I can say is each and every time I have ever used it, alls I know is I'm a believer. I use it in my oil and fuel. Without telling someone, I dumped MMO in my MB diesel. Someone I know well asked me what I did to the car. They noticed right away the car was a ton quieter and seemed smoother. I'm not sure why it works, not sure how it works, but alls I know it works well for me!

We assembled all the flat motors with it at McCune's (Mac's Aircraft Engine Service) back in The Day.  Stuff does good things for initial startup.

Back in the late 50's I hung around this general auto repair shop. It had a
couple of gas pumps, regular and ethyl. Sign on the pumps and the marquis
said "Lubrigas". Turns out they bought gasoline off the market, then when
it was delivered, the owner, O.H. "Luke " Lunda would bring out from the
back room of the station several 5 gallon cans of "Lubrigas" additive and
pour it into the underground storage tanks as the gasoline was being
delivered. Don't know ratios but it seemed by guess and by God to me. I
looked at the cans and remember that it said mfg by Marvel Mystery Oil.
Seems like it said Plano, Tx. but that was a long time ago. Old Luke swore
by the stuff. Can't say for sure one way or the other.

Those of us who still fly behind REAL engines (the ROUND variety) might, at times, accidently spill some MMO in with the fuel. The theory of the engine rebuilders is that MMO is effective as a lead scavenger. We all know the wonderful things that lead does to the innards of our engines.

I'd believe it helps with tons of stuff. Its the most effective way for me to quiet all my MB diesels. I add it to the wife's gas powered E class as well. We use it in the GMC. I always dump it into the fuel, and crank case. Like I said my diesels always run smoother, and less smokey. The GMC has had a issue with a noisy lifter from time to time. MMO makes it purr.

I have a MMO injector on my 1948 Buick. Never used it, but it couldn't hurt.

Mystery Oil

My 49 Olds had a jar on a bracket under the hood which fed oil into the intake manifold. Can't remember what I filled it with. Think the device was called a top oiler.
