I've gotten to the point in my "replace all rubber" project where new belts are now on the "get" list. Has there been any new information since this thread from about a year ago?:

http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&th=20048&prevloaded=1&rid=0&start=20

or any new info since the last update on Gene's Motorhome info site?:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/BELTS.html

Gary Kosier also posted that it appeared Dayco had gone to the dark (narrow) side.

So any new info or updates or are we just stuck trying to work with the narrow belts?

Steve,

Went to Gene's website got the part numbers for the Gates belts, did a Google search for the Gates and came up with a link to their
Online Catalog. I then did a search for the belts listed for the Olds 455 engine:

Power steering: 7450

http://tinyurl.com/cc3pvtd

http://www.gatespowerpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates?cmd=catSearchFrame&domProductQueryName=7450&returnURL=http://www.gatespow
erpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates&returnTarget=_top&gotoAdvSearch=false&CFID=68030000&CFTOKEN=89156087

Air Conditioning: 7619

http://tinyurl.com/d38pejb

http://www.gatespowerpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates?cmd=catSearchFrame&domProductQueryName=7619&returnURL=http://www.gatespow
erpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates&returnTarget=_top&gotoAdvSearch=false&CFID=68030000&CFTOKEN=89156087

Air Conditioning: 7612

http://tinyurl.com/cgt2y3u

http://www.gatespowerpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates?cmd=catSearchFrame&domProductQueryName=7612&returnURL=http://www.gatespow
erpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates&returnTarget=_top&gotoAdvSearch=false&CFID=68030000&CFTOKEN=89156087

Alternator: 7507 - I believe this to be an incorrect part number. On the Gates website I entered the Goodyear part number 15574 and
the Gates Interchange came up with 7570.

Alternator: 7570

http://tinyurl.com/c3r7vwd

http://www.gatespowerpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates?cmd=catSearchFrame&domProductQueryName=7570&returnURL=http://www.gatespow
erpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates&returnTarget=_top&gotoAdvSearch=false&CFID=68030000&CFTOKEN=89156087

The width of these belts is stated as 0.41 inches / 10 mm.

I used Convert for Windows 4.10 (http://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows/) to convert these two numbers back and forth:

Convert 0.41in to mm = 10.414mm

Convert 10mm to in = 0.3936996in

Here's measurements out of a conversion table:

Fraction Decimal Millimeters

13/32 0.4063 10.3188

27/64 0.4219 10.7156

7/16 0.4375 11.1125

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
The whole belt problem revolves around the missing row in your table:

15/32 0.4688 11.9063

"Cause the old number were of the format

15XYZ, for a 15/32" inch wide belt XY.Z" long.

Now the manufacturers are cheating on the 15.

If there was really any chance of finding good belts, we should be using,
not a 10 mm, but an 11 mm Go/No Go.

Steve,

By asking for "the approved sizes" you are assuming that all engines have the same pullies that they came out of the factory almost 40 years ago. I started off by ordering belts from NAPA for a 1976 olds 455. 2 out of three were the right size for my engine. One pullie had been changed out over the years and was none stock size. Solved the problem by getting the next two smaller size lengthed belts. Solved my problem and returned the two that didn't work. They have all been working for over a year now with no issues.

No, no, no! What I said was we're not measuring the belts correctly. I
called Dayco and complained that their website claimed 7/16" belts, but they
didn't pass our wrench test.
He replied that we weren't measuring correctly. Set a machinist's
protractor at 38 degrees, drop the belt in it and lay the scale across the
back of the belt. He was right!
So, I only use Dayco belts. I like them because they made most of the GM
belts and I'm a GM parts junky. So there!

Jim galbavy

Nope - I was asking about the width and I should have stated that.

Based on Gary Kosier's clarification I'll be looking for Dayco in the lengths I'll need.

As far as length there even seems there might be variance in length on stock GMC depending on year. (note that I am not sure enough to state this as a fact.)
