Hello Fellow GMC.neters,
Its been awhile since I have wrote in.
Things have been well and no problems :0)
I have still been lurking the forum weekly, just to stay on top of things.
I sure do appreciate you being there.
The Mrs. & I are heading up to the Okeechobee, Fl. area for a long weekend of boondock camping.
I have been leaving the GMC on 4X8s and letting the air out of the bags while it is not in use. (Was this a bad idea ?)
OK, now my question.
When I turned the key on and the compressor was filling the bags my "Low Air" light on the dash board stayed on (lit) even after it was all filled up. It also seems as though the GMC filled up higher than it normally does.
I am thinking that it is not sending the signal that all is as it is supposed to be.
What is supposed to be happening when it is working properly, and what should I be checking to see if all is well ?
Thank you in advance & Happy Thanksgiving to all.
If all goes well, I will be spending mine out in the woods.
Sincerely,
Glenn Gardner...Scooby Doo

Hello GMC.netters,
Its been a week, and I finally have figured out what the problem might be with my GMC leveling system.
After a few trips around all the connections with my bottle of soapy water, I discovered that air is leaking out of the top of what looks like a pressure sensor on the side of my air tank.
Since it has electrical wires coming out of it I assume that was why my "low air" light on the dash was coming on.
Air is coming out at the electrical connection on the top of the switch itself.
Photo:
My new question is : Where can I find a NEW replacement for this item ?
Or, will I have to get a used one from another GMC.
I will be headed out of town again this Thursday and be stopping by Alex Sirum GMC to say hello, as I do when in the neighborhood .
So, if getting a used one is my best option, I will get one from Jeff Sirum.
What are your thoughts, out there ?
Thanks again for being there.
Sincerely,
Glenn Gardner...G2photosmx.com

Glen, mine has had the compressor replaced and the switch - it is a standard Tractor Supply item, a pressure switch for a compressor. Wrap a bit of teflon tape or paint a bit of sealer on the threads before you install the new one. They're adjustable, set it to open around 120 PSI if you have stock bags on your coach. Mine is on a tee with a guage on the other end of the tee - makes it easy to set and see what the system uis doing. If you're tight for space, the switch can be extended on a piece of pipe with fittings as necessary. And when you finish, again do the soap test and tighten any leaks.

Sir: this is the low air warning light switch. It operates the low air light only, nothing to do with air pressure control. The leak would cause the compressor to run longer but not build more pressure. The pressure switch is mounted to the tank and a set of relays inside a square box with wires going to the compressor. It can be be adjusted but if it is acting up I would recomend replacing. It can also leak. Keep looking for those air leaks till it holds air. It can be done.

Mr. Bridges & Mr. Boyd,
Thank you for your comments, and sharing your knowledge.
I now completely understand my situation.
I will go to Napa and pick up a new warning light air switch.
For one, I am trying to keep my GMC stock as I can, and two, my current air switch is leaking on the metal part on the top.
So, I will want to fix it so it operates just as it did 36 years ago.
Once again, Thank you GMC.netters for sharing your knowledge.
You have made owning a GMC Motorhome that much more pleasurable.
Sincerely,

Pay attention to Boyd, it seems a PO wired mine differently from stock. I have only the compressor switch, and the LOW AIR light is run off it. If you have a seperate switch for the light, and it's leaking, replace it.

So, I went to Napa and picked up a :
Part Number: MBI BE13241
Product Line: Midland Brake Products
Removed my current switch and then realized that the treads on the Napa switch was different from the switch that is on my GMC.
The one on the GMC is 1/4 NPT male threads.
The Napa part is a smaller size, and a fine thread.
I don't know what it is ?
The Napa website and the bag it came in, had no information.
Since I am leaving town in the morning, I decided to epoxy the whole top of my old switch and then re- installed it.
I have not tried it out only because I am letting the epoxy completely cure.
I guess I'll know in the morning.
When I get home next week, I will try and find a switch that has a 1/4 NPT male thread on it.
Also the old (current switch has an adjustable screw on it) The napa one is not adjustable and I do not know what pressure it is set to close.
If anyone knows a link to the correct switch, please send it.
Thank you all again for your help & support.
Sincerely,
G2

Glenn,
The threads on the switch are 1/8 NPT. All you have to do is get a 1/4 NPT to 1/8 NPT reducer. They should have one at the Napa
store, if not Home Depot or Lowes will.

Rob M.

Scooby Doo wrote on Thu, 29 November 2012 08:33 | OK,
Its 9am and I am checking my e-mails before I head out.
I am a little confused on one of the last two posts.
1) If I put a plug in where my switch is, How would I be able to put a wire on the pressure the switch (if it is removed)
Or, do you mean another pressure switch.
I think I like the idea of putting a leg to the compressor motor and one to ground, again this way the light would come on only when the compressor is running (any thoughts?)
2) thank you Dan & Kosier for replying to me.
I am off to the races !
Have a great weekend,

If I understand your system correctly (it is different than mine) there are two pressure switches. One switch controls when the compressor runs and shuts off the compressor when the tank is full. We will call that SWITCH ONE. The second switch is the one you are working with and it only turns off and on a light on the dash. (My 1976 does not have that switch.) So remove the second switch and put a plug in the hole where it screwed in.
Now if you still want to have a light working, at the compressor control switch (SWITCH ONE) wire the light direct to the terminal supplying power to the motor.
OR... there is a second set of contacts on SWITCH ONE. Simply move the wires from SWITCH TWO to SWITCH ONE on the available the second set of contacts.

HOWEVER, if you want to use the telltale light in the dash then you cannot connect it to a terminal supplying power. It needs a ground. That is why I suggested connecting the wire to one of the unused contacts (on what you are calling (switch one) and then connect the other unused contact to GROUND.

Thanks Emery. Since I have neither a working telltale or the additional switch, I was not thinking about switching Hot (+12) vs. switching Ground when I made that posting.

Just a heads-up, you want to avoid getting the tape into the air system. It has a tenancy to break off in little threads and clog the height valves in the wheel wells.
Either use the pipe dope type stuff, or do not wrap the threads all the way to the end.
I just avoid the tape for this system.
